This book is written by the wife of a surgeon who has a heart attack (I think it was that; it was some life-threatening illness, at least). Basically, it was about the absolute importance of always being WITH a loved one who's very ill in a hospital. That sick person REQUIRES someone to be an advocate and watch that the correct things are being done.

It seems to me the word "tears" was in the title and/or "heart".

It is very well written, quite apart from the message.

Might this be Heartsounds, by Martha Weinman Lear? The husband isn't a heart surgeon, but a urologist, going by what Wikipedia says.
