Probably because of the forced marriages to underage girls. Possibly because of violence. I think it was implied they killed the librarian.
The main character was raised in a cult. She romances a boy who escapes early on in the book, promising to come back and rescue her. The girl meets a traveling librarian by chance and starts reading books, her first intro to the outside world. I think she reads Alice in Wonderland.
Eventually she is arranged to be married to someone in the cult. She either escapes before the wedding or shortly after. The cult is disbanded/the members are arrested. At the end she is staying with a woman. I don't know what happened to the boyfriend.
