Commercial Photography
Let’s take a quick look at this eclectic and fascinating capital city in Ethiopia.

✱ Addis Ababa or "new flower" was founded 150 years ago as a military encampment. It is now a metropolis of more than 5 million people and the country’s commercial and cultural hub.
✱ At a height of 7,726 feet, Addis Ababa is one of the highest capital cities in the world, and the highest in Africa.
✱ Despite being close to the equator, the altitude keeps the average temperatures around 77F (25C). The city’s all-time record temperature is only 90F (32C).
✱ Addis Ababa is often called "the capital of Africa" since it hosts the headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the African Union (AU).

Choose a level and enjoy your visit!

Tasks

1. Medhane Alem Cathedral
Commercial Photography
The majority of the Ethiopians are deeply religious with 43% of the population being Ethiopian-Orthodox. The denomination has the second largest cathedral in all of Africa: Medhane Alem, whose name means “Saviour of the World”. It is a breath-taking masterpiece of church architecture. The beautiful paintings and impressive Stations of the Cross are definitely worth a visit.

✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in MEDHANE ALEM.

2. Lion of Judah Monuments
Commercial Photography
Long the symbol of Ethiopia’s monarchy, there are two important Lion of Judah Monuments in the city. The first was for Emperor Selassie’s coronation in 1930 but was then taken by the Italians during their occupation of the country. It was erected in Rome causing a protest against Italian colonialism by patriot Zerai Deres. It was not returned to Addis Ababa until the 1960s and now stands as a reminder of his legendary heroism. The second monument was erected in 1955 in its absence to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Emperor Selassie reign.

✱ Read a book that has statue or lion on the cover OR
✱ Read a series book #2 OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in LION OF JUDAH.

3. Ethiopian Ethnological Museum
Commercial Photography
The Ethnological Museum of Ethiopia is located on the beautiful grounds of Addis Ababa University. It was established in 1955 to preserve the nations heritage, conduct research into the cultural history of Ethiopia, and provide education about its cultural heritage.

********************************************************************
Tasks

1. Medhane Alem Cathedral

✱ Read a book that has columns or a cross on the cover OR
✱ Read a book that has 4 and 3 (in any order) in its total page count OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in MEDHANE ALEM.

2. Lion of Judah Monuments

The Ethnological Museum of Ethiopia is located on the beautiful grounds of Addis Ababa University. It was established in 1955 to preserve the nations heritage, conduct research into the cultural history of Ethiopia, and provide education about its cultural heritage. The museum has over 13,000 items including ethnic outfits, instruments, tools, and other artifacts making it one of the most interesting museums in the city.

✱ Read a book that has a musical instrument or ethnic costume on the cover OR
✱ Read a book that is tagged CULTURAL on its GR homepage OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in ETHNOLOGICAL MUSEUM.

4. The National Museum

The National Museum of Ethiopia is another important museum to visit and is where Ethiopia’s most famous resident resides. Lucy, the oldest and most complete hominid skeleton ever discovered, was found during an archaeological dig in 1974. She is believed to be 3.2 million years old. Her fascinating exhibit charts the evolution of Homosapiens and our African origins.

✱ Read a book that has a skeleton (whole or partial) on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with a MC whose first name starts with a letter in LUCY OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in NATIONAL MUSEUM.

5. The Merkato

The Merkato is the biggest outdoor market in the whole of Africa. It's so big it is suggested you get a guide to show you around. The must-see sections include the spice market, the hand-made baskets market, and second hand items market. It's also a great place to get the world famous Arabica coffee. Be prepared for an exciting atmosphere, new smells, and hundreds of colorful stalls.

✱ Read a book that has a colorful cover OR
✱ Read a book with a MC that owns a business that sells something OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in THE MERKATO.

6. Meskel Square

This famous square is known for its crazy traffic and is often used for public gatherings. But it is also known as the "spiritual home of running" in Ethiopia, where hundreds of runners, some of them members of the Ethiopian Olympic running team, dart the switchbacks crossing the amphitheater. They gather early in the morning to run the different routes of varying distances, allowing them to change up their work out each day. It's an inspiring sight to see!

✱ Read a book with running shoes or sneakers on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with a character who runs on a regular basis OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first & last initial is found in MESKEL SQUARE.
