Rainbowheart | 21140 comments I'm hoping to find books critical of BDSM, specifically from a feminist (not religious) perspective

There's a good sex critical list, but only a handful of those titles are about BDSM, and I was hoping to find something newer than the early '80s. Something along the lines of an updated version of Against Sadomasochism would be excellent.

Non-fiction preferred, but even a fiction book would be helpful, as long as it was published within the past few decades. There are quite a few titles about porn and prostitution, but very little explicitly about BDSM. Even if it's not the main focus of the book, I would still be interested.

Thanks mucho for any help!

Rainbowheart | 21140 comments Thank you, Rosa! Those sound interesting, especially the Alice Walker story. I will be adding it to my list.

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5231 comments Great, I hope they’re what you’re looking for. The Alice Walker story is from the early 80’s, but sometimes one needs that good old-fashioned second-wave feminism.

Miss Mara | 156 comments Andrea Dworkin should have a book along those lines. From what I know of her it seems like something she’d write.

Rainbowheart | 21140 comments Thanks, Rebecca. I'm thinking Dworkin may have, although I don't know of any specific essays.

Ideally, I'd like to find material published after the 1980s, but the sex-critical movement took a sharp slide after that. Most newer material is simply found on blogs, not gathered together in book form.

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5231 comments There’s Gerald's Game.

Rainbowheart | 21140 comments Thanks, Rosa! I'll add Gerald's Game to my list. Looks there was a movie version that came out recently, too.

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5231 comments Yes, and it was good, but I like the book more for its detail and 1992 setting.

Rainbowheart | 21140 comments Not new, but A Burst of Light by Audre Lorde has an interview about sadomasochism.

Rainbowheart | 21140 comments The Brain That Changes Itself has a chapter highly critical of sadomasochism and pornography's role in creating and promoting it.

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5231 comments The Sensuous Woman hates that kind of thing, but thinks wife swapping is A-OK.
I believe The Handmaid's Tale speaks against it, and The Handmaid's Tale: The Graphic Novel definitely does. Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions, by Gloria Steinem, has a very good essay called “Erotica vs. Pornography,” in which she argues that sexual images of force, torture, and power over another person are pornography, and harmful. So, all BDSM. I think you’d be interested.

Rainbowheart | 21140 comments Thanks again for all the titles, Rosa!

I feel a list brewing....

Rainbowheart | 21140 comments Thanks, Rosa. Great for the time period, but it would be awesome if there were an updated version. The world has changed so much since 1982.

Found a couple more oldies, The Myth of Women's Masochism and Call Me Lesbian. Not sure if the former deals explicitly with BDSM, but it seems like it would.

If anyone has more recs, keep 'em coming!
