Wow. I first saw the Pierce Brosnan James Bond movies in the 1990s, watched several of the older movies, and finished with the new Daniel Craig ones. I like Bond. He comes off as charming, adventurous, capable and dedicated...also egotistical and womanizing, but he’s balanced. Once you read the character’s intimate thoughts, written in the early1950s, he’s much more self-centered, misogynistic, controlling and generally un-likeable. This may be the first time I like the movie more than the book. Sometimes the attitudes of separate eras are just too different. On the other hand Bond is an iconic character and this is his debut, so it’s a bit of a must-read.

Bond, a 007 agent from London, is at the Royale Casino on the coast of France. His assignment is to out-gamble an Russian operative deep in debt and desperate to raise cash before the Soviets take him out. He has assistance from a useful French agent, some unexpected backup from the CIA and a distracting inexperienced female agent to hang off his arm and look pretty. Gambling and strategy take up a lot of the story, as does spy craft. Character development and romance are definitely lacking. Tortured self-pity finishes things off.

Cora (corareading) | 1456 comments I had the same thought as you. I like Bond more when I don't know what he is thinking.
