Oh yay! I've been meaning to get to this.

message 3: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan I read this around the time the books were coming out, and became quiet the fan of the Eddings team. A good quality hero's arc story.

Loriidae | 323 comments Yes!!! I first read this series in the early nineties and then one memorable road trip I read Pawn of prophecy out aloud to my husband and teenage son so about 12 years ago. Definitely time for a reread. Does anyone have an opinion on the audio?

message 5: by Barry (new)

Barry (boprawira) | 1186 comments I've actually had the first three books of the series sitting on my shelf for more than 2 years now. Got them from a used bookstore for like $1 each back then. Never had the incentives to read them, now I do. So, yes, I'll be joining these reads.

message 6: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Interestingly enough I sold my copies to a 2nd hand bookshop many years ago.

message 7: by Niki Hawkes, I made it past GOTM... barely (new)

The audio for belgariad are decent. Jury is still out on mallorean (I can't tell if my annoyance at the characters is due to how they're written or due to the performance).

Belgariad is awesome. :) I just did a reread not too long ago, else I'd join. I might take another crack at Mallorian if y'all read on.

Thanks Niki.

Narilka | 3678 comments I'm so tempted. I did a reread not long ago. We'll see how I feel come January. I love this series, so much nostalgia.

Choko (chokog) | 8700 comments I am in!

message 11: by Rob (new)

Rob (nefariasbredd) | 2052 comments One of my childhood favorites. I've been trying to get Julia to read it and she keeps going "meh" on me and reading something else. Maybe this will be a good reason to revisit it after so many years :)

message 12: by Beste (new)

Beste | 1163 comments Soooooooo tempting! I will decide later though.

message 13: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Tempting I read the first few chapters a few years ago but put it down after I got distracted

I don't mind going back to see Gareon (I loike that name for some reason) again

message 14: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 5486 comments Ah, one of my fav series. I may pop in for talks. It's been a long time since I've done a re-read of this one.

message 15: by Julia (new)

Julia | 122 comments I've read Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress and really loved them! I won't be joining in this read of the series, but The Belgariad are getting higher on my to-read list, so I can't wait!

message 16: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (vinjii) | 1100 comments I might try this, since they're on my bookshelf!

message 17: by Loriidae (new)

Loriidae | 323 comments It's a traditional coming of age fantasy with a quest and an evil villain without the grim dark of a lot of modern fantasy

message 18: by Gary (new)

Gary Sundell | 105 comments Wow a series I am ahead of the group read. I have recently read the first 3 books of The Mallorean. I read the Belgariad during 2015 and 2016.

I continue to be annoyed at the lack of availability of the bulk of Eddings books in the US in ebook format.

message 19: by GARN (new)

GARN ARNOLD I'm in. Always wanted to read this

LOL funny that my book schedule shifted to this! But I think I'll have them finished by the time we get to the discussions. I'll join in anyways!

message 21: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie I am going way back here, but I think I listened to the Belgariad books as my first audible books gifted by a friend years ago. So- I will start back with The Mallorean (Guardians of the West) with the group in June. Just put it on hold at the library.

message 22: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie Finished my re-listen (?) of Guardians of the West, and enjoyed it enough I'll get King of the Murgos next month on library audiobook. I don't remember noticing before how male oriented they were though. I thought Polgara had a bigger role before.

message 23: by Choko (new)

Choko (chokog) | 8700 comments Bonnie, me too! How interesting... I thought Poulgara was like the strongest, most amazing female character ever, when I read it in my youth... Our experiences shape our perceptions:-)

message 24: by Gary (new)

Gary Sundell | 105 comments There are more female characters in the rest of the series. No spoilers here.

Thank you. It wasn't so much the number, just I remember them being more important and less supportive in the Belgariad books.
