This is a series I listened to on audio a few years back (2004-2005?). It's magical and kind of dark. The kids have the ability to transform into animals. As the plot thickens, the main character find out that they can transform into imaginary creatures such as dragons. One boy transforms into a vampire who continually sicks the life out of his mother. Don't remember much else; would love to read again! Note-it's not Animorphs.
