Heather | 8547 comments Born to a wealthy cloth merchant, this red haired boy went on to become the next big painter in the Western world. From an early age ____________ showed a keen interest and promising talent in both painting and drawing and this was noted by his mother. His very first inspiration was most likely his mother, who was a skilled embroiderer who presumably sketched her work before executing it onto the tapestry.

He completed a total of 99 paintings, 72 of which were portraits. It is believed that [tutor] encouraged him to focus on portraiture as it was obvious that this is where his talent lay. The artist's portraits were mostly of subjects from Royal and aristocratic circles whom he had met on his pilgrimage to Italy.

As well as portraits, __________________ spent a great deal of time painting religious works and these were in great demand from local churches and royalty and the artist was eventually made England's leading court painter.

No other artist has lived such a rich life as _____________________ and this was most probably due to his extremely sensitive nature and devoted relationship with his mother. Just like his paintings, ___________'s life is a rich picture full of dramatic events.

___________'s works are known for their smooth finish and bright, bold color schemes, namely his signature use of reds and browns to define, depth, emotion and shape.

The artist became popular for reinventing iconographical aspects in his portrait painting. He depicted his subject's naturally while at the same time ensuring their social status was intact.

Through emphasizing natural beauty, ______________ was able to elevate the status and presence of his sitters. His works were not overly-dramatic and this made him popular among the Protestant courts of England.

__________________ was most noted for his extensive and brilliant use of the color palette. He had a talent for mixing the right tones to create a vivid image that would render the reality of the moment and uplift the human spirit.

Who Am I?

Heather | 8547 comments I can see how you would guess Holbein from this, it sounds like him.

Dirk Van | 3464 comments Mmm, if it's not Anthony van Dyck and he's from Antwerp, then maybe Jacob Jordaens?

Antwerp is full of these statues ;-)

Yes, Dirk. It's van Dyck. I don't know him as 'Sir Anthony' so I didn't realize you got it. Are you sure you're not looking at the spoiler? Since you have gotten every single one, even the ones that nobody guesses the first time... hmmmmm

Dirk Van | 3464 comments We call him that because he lived most of his life in England.
I'm sorry I didn't realize you wouldn't recognize the statue. He's pretty well known here, only second to Rubens.
And no I don't look at the spoiler.
"every single one" is a bit exaggerated don't you think?
I did not guess Cassatt, Chagall, Pollock, Homer...
Only Miro, Lichtenstein and Moore and now Van Dyck.
I admit I knew Bronzino (you know why) but that was put up and answered when I was sleeping.
Maybe you should add the spoiler only after a couple of days...

I can see how you would know this one because he is from your town. No, I'm not as well educated in the arts as a lot of this group so I didn't recognize the statue. I like it! And yes, Rubens was his tutor so I didn't name him.

And I thought of not putting the spoiler up until after it was guessed, but I think there are lurkers who would like to know. And, I don't know how legal that is not to attribute the site when I write it. But good thought! I'm glad you don't look, I am impressed by your knowledge, then! And again, glad to have you here, Dirk.

Dirk Van | 3464 comments You still up? It must be the middle of the night over there!
You must be a nightowl then ;-) (I'm reading Matthew Walker's Why we sleep at the moment )

Heather | 8547 comments Haha no, I was dead asleep until my cat started sneezing like crazy so I called the emergency animal hospital for advice. I saw your post while I was waiting. Now I’m worried and can’t sleep. Yeah, it’s almost 3am right now.

Dirk Van | 3464 comments Oh dear, I hope your cat will be all right!
But try not to worry too much!
As I've been reading: a good night sleep is very important!
At least it's Saturday (or do you have to work?)
Here in Antwerp it's almost noon and the only thing I have to do is get some groceries for the weekend ;-)

I envy you! Yes, it's Saturday now, but I do have to work. She is so lethargic and wouldn't sleep on the bed with me. So I moved into the front room and laid on the couch where she was laying on the floor. I didn't sleep at all. But then 10 minutes ago she was crying for some tuna, ate it right up and wanted to go outside. I do worry, I hope she's okay. The neighbors (I live in a trailer park) have their trailer skirt damaged and she gets under there to sleep. They also have sewer problems so she comes out wet and stinky. That can't be good for her. I don't know what to do about that.

Not that anyone needed to know all that.... I didn't sleep much, now for a new day!

Good morning, afternoon, evening everyone!
