Nikki ~ The Nocturnal Bookworm (nyxreadsstuff) | 19 comments I recently decided on doing a personal challenge/project to read all of the forgotten realms books that i have interest in, however i keep going back and forth as to weather to read them in chronological order or publication order. I was looking for input from others more familiar than me.

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 96 comments For years it haunted me as to the "correct" reading order. I decided on publication order. So far I have only read Darkwalker on Moonshae the first published FR book. So I'm interest in other's replys aswell.

Anthony (albinokid) | 1471 comments I’m amazed at the hard work it must have taken to put that list together. How many titles are there? And you’re planning to read all of them? That’ll be a massive achievement!

message 5: by Bobby (new)

Bobby | 869 comments I've only read the books by R. A. Salvatore, and I haven't even read all of those yet. I originally read them in publication order, but I re-read them years later in chronological order and it was good that way too. Most of them were written in chronological order, but the first trilogy and the second trilogy are swapped. I actually read something a while ago by R. A. Salvatore himself saying if he was new to the series, he would read it in chronological order...but might read it in publication order. So he can't even make up his mind on which way to start.

I also notice you are missing Salvatore's Stone of Tymora series in your above list. They are YA books co-written by his son, but they are still set in the Forgotten Realms with the main character crossing paths with some of the characters Salvatore's other books. Unfortunately I haven't read them so I don't know where they fit in.

I don't really know whether publication or chronological would be better. There are so many authors that you are going to be jumping around with different characters and settings in just about every book. I think I would personally like chronological, because at least you have the structure of the timeline, even if you have to pause a story partway through.

Trike Pretty sure I pulled a muscle just glancing over that list.

This is exactly one of the Reading Achievements I mentioned the other day: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Good luck!

Scott (dodger1379) I’ve always had good luck with publication order.

Unless I miscounted it's currently 188, and yeah lol it was a few few hours of reading synopsis to see if I wanted to include it and checking two sites to see the time it occured. I'm planning to read everything in the list unless I start a series and just hate it then the rest of the series will be removed from the list most likely. I did take the time to read synopsis so this isn't every book set in the forgotten realms just the ones that interested me or I already owned

Everyone seems to be so torn on which order is best!

I did see those and I hesitated to add them because I'm not usually a fan of YA. Of course, there are exceptions and I have found YA books in the past that I didn't mind but I've just found a lot of the troupes make it hard for me to enjoy them.

If anyone who has read the Stone of Tymora series and can tell me if I would have to worry about teenage angst, love triangles, or insta-love. Those are my top three things that will turn me off.

And see that's why I'm kinda leaning towards chronological I like the structure of the timeline. Yeah, it may be annoying sometimes to have to pause a story like you said but I feel like I won't mind that too much?

Thanks!

Is it just personal preference or do you have a specific reason why you like it. I'm really curious as to why people prefer the order they prefer :)

message 12: by Kateb (new)

Kateb | 893 comments I find that the author often feels that some point needs to be explained, expanded and therefore does a book that is out of "order" if you follow the publication order.

often the authors site, or their fan site will discuss which is the best order, and also give you both so you don't have to work it out.

Cristin | 6 comments I read almost every Forgotten Realms book from 1987 to about 2001 as they came out (publication order). If I were to re-read them all now (which I am thinking of doing in a few years), I'd probably do so in publication order with the exception of reading all trilogies/series together. For example, I would read Darkwalker on Moonshae and the other 2 books in the Moonshae trilogy before going on to The Crystal Shard and the rest of that first Drizzt trilogy, even though Crystal Shard was published before was published before Black Wizards, the 2nd Moonshae book. I hope that makes sense?

Edited for tpyo(s)

Joon (everythingbeeps) | 512 comments My answer to this question, no matter the context, is always publication order, unless the author(s) explicitly state otherwise.

Years ago I wanted to read all the FR books, and even spent months trolling ebay and used book stores building up the collection. Wherever I left off (about 2008 I'd say), I had acquired basically all of them, minus maybe one or two that didn't really fit neatly into the series.

Still never got around to actually reading them (though in high school/college I read most of Salvatore's books...whatever was published through say 1998 or so?

I still have them, though they're buried in boxes somewhere. I definitely wouldn't attempt to read all of them now, but every once in a while I want to see if I can feel that nostalgia again and I think about digging out one of those boxes.
