Bob Cardenas Informative and thoughtful review of existing archives, such as folklore, police records and other accounts, that provide insight to a society long gone. The Cat Massacre is only a sliver of the homework done in this tome and it delivers the requisite knowledge.

Andrew-Mario Hart-Grana A fantastic insight into the minds of those who sometimes remain hidden away from historical records. Very interesting!

Annemarie Donahue I just read this in my last semester for a history grad class. It was fantastic! Darnton is a brilliant researcher and a wonderful story teller. The Cat Massacre essay was my favourite, but the others were equally engaging and funny. (well as funny as an essay about a bunch of underpaid printers catching and killing a bunch of cat can be!)
