This was an audio-book I listened to about 3 years ago. I don't remember what period it was, but I believe it's set in England. A mother and her young son move into town. The town quickly becomes interested into them and their mysterious background, especially their neighbor who is I believe is our love interest. (I believe his name is either Oliver or Edward). He becomes close to her son and tries to court her despite the strange rumors going around town. Mother is good at art and keeps a portrait of her ex-husband in her house. I never finished the book, but the last thing I remember was that she gave him pages of her diary to explain her story to him.

I also remember that there was a british show/movie based off the book, but I couldn't find that either.
