So it looks like this memoir is divided up into four mini-books so I'm going to create a thread for each of them. Discussion of chapters 1-4 will take place here.

I found the Wikipedia page on the book interesting: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_wi...

Is "Outdoor Literature" considered an adventure story?

I am not sure. I wonder if it was a catch-all phase applied after the book had been out. I would think that Rachel Carson's book would be outdoor literature too.

Ginny (burmisgal) | 190 comments I am just a few pages in, and already loving this. "Africa is of an ancient age and the blood of many of her peoples is as venerable and as chaste as truth."

Ginny (burmisgal) | 190 comments I found this fictionalized account of Beryl's life: Circling the Sun. And there is a movie in the works. Also a TV movie from 1988. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096081/...

I found book one a bit stand off-ish. However, book two is more personalized to her childhood.

I loved this quote: "names are keys that open corridors no longer fresh in the mind, but nonetheless familiar in the heart."

I just found that my local library has Straight on Till Morning: A Biography of Beryl Markham. That is really tempting to read (view spoiler)

Why should a life of outdoor adventure not be classed as a memoir? Wonder if the classifications have more to do with where a bookseller thinks they might snag a certain demographic.

Why should a life of..."

I guess I'm not sure what exactly "outdoor literature" refers to. I would personally classify it as a memoir but, like you said, maybe it's just a term a bookseller uses to try and snag more purchases.
