Welcome!

This group is focused solely (for now) on the 100 books on the Great American Read list. We are reading and discussing the books on that list.

LIST:
https://www.pbs.org/the-great-america...

https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

Please introduce yourself on the get-to-know-you topic:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

If you'd like to jump in and read a book with the group, go to the Current Group Reads Folder.

You could also post comments about books in the Past group reads folder, or look for books at the bottom of the discussion page.

Feel free to post to any topic, or post your own question in the general area.

Other questions? Click on my name and send me a direct message.

Happy reading!

We select 2 or more books per month to give people a choice. You might just want to read one to start, depending on your time and preferences. Some of the books on the list are quite long, so we allow extra time to read those. Our "big books" are usually allotted 3 months.

UPDATED January 13 2019
Group Reading Schedule:

July 15 - Sept 30, 2018 : Big Book read: Lonesome Dove

August 1 - 31: SHORT Bonus books. Tie vote. Pick one, none or get a head start on later books.

Siddartha

August 15- Sept 30: Their Eyes Were Watching God

September 1 - 30 - Diversity Theme Americanah

Sept 1 to Dec 31 -Big book read - War and Peace by Tolstoy.

October: Horror theme - Frankenstein
October: War and Peace (continued)

November: Theme -The Great American Read #1 book. - To Kill a Mockingbird

It is! A lot of us started over the summer, but you're in the right place. Welcome!

Linda Abhors the New GR Design | 915 comments Hi Queen,
I think a lot of people did that here
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

You're in for "Heart of Darkness", IIRC? Hope to see you there!

Diana c. Ariza | 1 comments Hi! I’m new to the group!
My name is Diana and I’m trying to make reading a daily habit! I love to read but with two little kids, sometimes I find it impossible!

Welcome Diana! I remember trying to get my boys to nap at the same time, and I confess to using the TV to keep them occupied while I read in the next room. Lately I've been listening to books on tape at night instead of watching TV. You can read a lot that way (and it's better for your brain to avoid the lights of electronic devices before sleep). What do you like to read? Little Women is one of the books we're reading now.

MK (wisny) | 58 comments I didn't know about The Grreat American Read until I found a post of NancyJ's in another group, that led me here.

What a cool idea! Were there radio or television episodes that went along with the GAR?

There was, possiby the episodes are still up. Nancy posted a link to the website.
There was a kickoff episode for one hour in the spring, a reminder episode in the fall that re-hashed a lot of that material, and then 5 episodes, one for each theme.

Hope they still work!

Oops, no, the link was missing. You can read the 2018 and 2019 Get-to-know-you threads in the general folder.

Hi, we haven't discussed it yet. I created a new thread for it, and you can be the first to comment. Also, make a comment on the What are you reading 2019 topic, and tell everyone about it.
