Thomas Fawkes is turning to stone, and the only cure to the Stone Plague is to join his father’s plot to assassinate the king of England.
Silent wars leave the most carnage. The wars that are never declared, but are carried out in dark alleys with masks and hidden knives. Wars where color power alters the natural rhythm of 17th century London. And when the king calls for peace, no one listens until he finally calls for death.
But what if death finds him first?
Keepers think the Igniters caused the plague. Igniters think the Keepers did. But all Thomas knows is that the Stone Plague infecting his eye is spreading. And if he doesn’t do something soon, he’ll be a lifeless statue. So when his Keeper father, Guy Fawkes, invites him to join the Gunpowder Plot—claiming it will put an end to the plague—Thomas is in.
The plan: use 36 barrels of gunpowder to blow up the Igniter King.
The problem: Doing so will destroy the family of the girl Thomas loves. But backing out of the plot will send his father and the other plotters to the gallows. To save one, Thomas will lose the other.
No matter Thomas’s choice, one thing is clear: once the decision is made and the color masks have been put on, there’s no turning back.
Chapter 13: (view spoiler)[I am kind of bored right now.. I don't know what to think. Maybe I need a nap? Oh, and I also don't really like Henry or his dad right now. Maybe even Emma? I don't know. I'm also wondering how only one eye of his has the plague right now.. (hide spoiler)]
Chapter 21: (view spoiler)[It's getting a bit better. I think I just want to know how the plague is just randomly starting to spread again on him..then the whole thing about the white light is still interesting. (hide spoiler)]
Finished: (view spoiler)[Wow - it got so much better. Totally saw Dee being the bad guy and since I hated Henry from the beginning I wasn't really surprised with his involvement. I'm sad that his dad died and how he saw it but I was definitely intrigued with Thomas and Emma's friendship and his white mask. (hide spoiler)]
I definitely need a nap! (view spoiler)[ I'm so confused as to this struggle between igniters and keepers. I clearly wasn't retaining everything said haha (hide spoiler)]
Ch. 15 (view spoiler)[ I'm definitely confused by this Igniter vs Keeper situation. And wth is the white color?? I think my brain is too tired for this. Thomas seems okay, but this whole plague business and being turned to stone is very strange. Hopefully things will start to make sense soon (hide spoiler)]
Ch. 23 (view spoiler)[ At this point, I feel like Thomas is going to turn to stone before he gets his mask. I still am kinda confused by the whole white light thing. I'm glad THomas is starting to not trust anyone and trying to find answers for himself. I'm not sure whether the white light really sides with either the Igniters or Keepers. (hide spoiler)]
Ch. 36 (view spoiler)[ jesus this Dee person is responsible for the plague!! I hope Thomas figures out a way to stop Dee and the keepers. Clearly the white light doesn't like either side. But it does seem to like Emma. I was surprised when it was revealed she was dark skinned but only because I couldn't remember any description of what she looked like. I'm really bad at character description with audiobooks. I'm not sure how I feel about romantically involved Emma and Thomas (hide spoiler)]
Finished (view spoiler)[ I'm glad they took down Dee and cured the plague. Sad that guy Fawkes died at the end. I'm glad Thomas freed Emma from Henry and got her that recommendation letter. Overall an interesting story (hide spoiler)]
