What are your top five Batman stories?

Batman is likely the most popular and well known (US) super hero in the world. I think he has a significant edge in TV and films over the years over other US super heroes.

There are decades worth of stories written featuring him. Which stories stand out from the crowd for you?

Hmm. I'll have to think about this for awhile but definitely:

Batman: Year One
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Grant Morrison's Batman run

Batman Knightfall
Batman Venom
Batman Year 100
Batman Black Mirror

Top 10 in no particular order.

I'd like to reread Long Halloween, Hush and Black Mirror first, but I'm pretty sure they will be on my list.

I have mixed feelings about Killing Joke. Love the art, but I think the ambiguous ending still has me hesitating.

Not sure I've ever read The Cult or Venom.

TDKR - Got me back to Batman and comics in general
The Cult - I was young when that story was published and I believe I read it 15 times in a row.
Contagion - It rang something with that Ra's Al Ghul mystery.
Long Halloween - Need to reread, but that Omni is coming soon.
No Mans Land - I had ALL the floppies. German editions though

Donovan | 1154 comments @B I agree about the Killing Joke. It’s a classic story with what I think is a “gotcha” ending. Which is why, along with it just being too popular for its own good, it moves down my list.

Venom is a fantastic Dennis O’Neil storyline. I find it a companion piece to The Cult in that it deals with Bats’ psychological issues.

I’ve never read Contagion or No Man’s Land arcs. Been on my list forever.

This is a tough question for me as well. I do love that a couple of stories mentioned I haven't read yet. :)

I think my top stories are:
Batman: The Black Mirror (Batman Horror story)
Batman: Hush (Love the art and musing on friendship really resonated with me).
Batman: The Long Halloween/Dark Victory
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
The Untold Legend of the Batman by Len Wein

Donovan | 1154 comments Haven’t heard of that Wein story. But I do like his Swamp Thing.

I read a collected edition as a kid and it was the definitive Batman origin story for me. :)

It is interesting that Batman has been around since 1939. However, most of the top stories for everyone are relatively modern. Frank Miller's work is usually the oldest anyone cites as a favorite.

Donovan | 1154 comments I think we’re just a modern audience who appreciates modern Batman.
