This thread is open to discuss The Governess Game by Tessa Dare.

Synopsis
He’s been a bad, bad rake—and it takes a governess to teach him a lesson

The accidental governess.

After her livelihood slips through her fingers, Alexandra Mountbatten takes on an impossible post: transforming a pair of wild orphans into proper young ladies. However, the girls don’t need discipline. They need a loving home. Try telling that to their guardian, Chase Reynaud: duke’s heir in the streets and devil in the sheets. The ladies of London have tried—and failed—to make him settle down. Somehow, Alexandra must reach his heart... without risking her own.

The infamous rake.

Like any self-respecting libertine, Chase lives by one rule: no attachments. When a stubborn little governess tries to reform him, he decides to give her an education—in pleasure. That should prove he can’t be tamed. But Alexandra is more than he bargained for: clever, perceptive, passionate. She refuses to see him as a lost cause. Soon the walls around Chase’s heart are crumbling... and he’s in danger of falling, hard.

      ~ Buddy Style Reads ~
Three Ways to Enjoy a Book!
At NRBC we use three styles of buddy reads. These will be indicated in the thread title as “Buddy Read”, “Relaxed Buddy Read” or “Informal Buddy Read”.
A “Buddy Read” has a discussion leader and a reading date is set to start the book. A reading schedule is posted prior to the start date and discussion questions are posted each day regarding that section of the book. More information about these types of reads is below. An example is here, showing a reading schedule here.

A “Relaxed Buddy Read” is similar to our usual “buddy reads” except there are less questions and break points. For example, a book may be split into three sections and those reading the book should pause at the end of the section to answer some discussion questions, make comments, or ask their own questions to other readers. An example is here.

An “Informal Buddy Read” doesn’t have a discussion leader and participants are asked to consider some generic questions when making comments about the book. An example is here.

A “Read and Watch Buddy Read” may be set up as any of the above, but we will also watch the movie or T.V. series - or even go to a play! - and make comparisons, discussing what has been left out or changed as well as the actors and actresses. There is a long debate of what one should do first: read the books or watch the movie? We usually read first, but it isn’t essential. Also, if you would like to join in, but don’t want to watch the movie, show, or play, but only read the books, that is fine, too. An example is here.

Geri I’ll definitely join in! I loved The Duchess Deal!

Karishma (karishmanewar) Looking forward to this!

Geri When will everyone be starting? I am flexible. I can start as early as tomorrow or later.

Karishma (karishmanewar) I have already started. Just a few pages in.

Do start as soon as you can!

Geri OK, i’ll Start tomorrow. Happy reading, Karishma!

Karishma (karishmanewar) Happy reading to you too!

Geri I listened to the first 6 chapters last night. I am liking it so far! Alexandra is intelligent but a little awkward. I like heroines who are smart and ambitious. So far I do like the relationship between Alex and Chase. Chase is a rake and scoundrel. But he does have scruples and a kind heart. It’s sweet how he is taking care of Rosamund and and Daisy. I laughed when he just went along with his ward’s antics! Sometimes I find children in romance books annoying. But I am enjoying the children in this book.

I’ll try to read another 6 chapters today. What do you think about the book, Karishma?

Ora (oeamis) I am going to start tonight

Karishma (karishmanewar) I liked the names they gave him e.g. The Bookshop Rake!
Their meet "Cave of Carnality"

It is definitely sweet how he has been taking care of them - finding new lines to say first thing every morning - being awakened every day for a mock funeral.

The children in this book aren't very annoying I agree - but I am maybe a bit tired of this "having to hire a governess for uncooperative wards who make every other governess run away trope"

Karishma (karishmanewar) Did you read the previous book?

message 14: by Ora (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ora (oeamis) Yes! Tessa Dare is one of my favorite historical authors

Ora (oeamis) It's been a while since I have read this type of troupe.

I do love Alex's imagination with how she is teaching the girls...and now they were able to have funeral at sea

I also read The Duchess Deal. I loved that one. This one is really good but I don’t “love” it as much. Probably because, as you mentioned, the story isn’t very original. I rolled my eyes after Chase tells Alex he “abstains” (view spoiler) But this was only a minor complaint. I will be finishing today. This is a quick, light, sexy read!

Karishma (karishmanewar) Yes your minor complaint was definitely a weird one for me too!

I'm currently reading The Duchess Deal also. That is completely on another level altogether!
