Ellen | 2137 comments In this well done follow-up to "Beartown", Backman continues the story of the Bears hockey team and the town that loves and supports them. The young man who committed the crime has left town leaving his team and his victim, 16-year-old Maya Andersson in his devastating wake. Maya's father, Peter, continues as the Beartown Bears general manager; mom Kira secretly prays for her own time to shine, but her dreams are always second to Peter and his hockey; 12-year-old brother Leo is angry, mostly because he feels he should have been able to protect his sister, and his anger is leading him to dangerous and violent behavior. Team members Benji, Amat and Bobo are still part of the Bears squad, but volatile William Lyt has joined the arch rival team in Hed. The Beartown - Hed rivalry is the spark that will ignite the hatred between the two towns and will lead to consequences that none of these people will ever forget.

I love Backman's writing and his treatment of characters. There are so many side stories developed during the hockey season: the new Beartown coach, who is a shock to everyone; a manipulative politician who plays both sides of the fence as he lines his pockets; sweet but powerful Benji who harbors a secret that could not only destroy him but the entire Bear team; Bobo, the young man with little talent but an enormous heart who is facing the imminent loss of a loved one; Ana, Maya's best friend who sees something she shouldn't and broadcasts it to the town setting off a landslide of hatred and disgust. There are so many more characters with wonderful storylines that fill this book with such depth. Loved it.
