Spacepig Pig | 1441 comments And so we move on to Lez's latest nom, Scottish band Frightened Rabbit. I don't know much about them, apart from the fact that I nearly went to see them last year, then decided not to bother. Looks like I won't get the chance now as their main man died earlier this year.

Five studio albums to choose from as far as I can see, so let's have a dig and see what we can find.

Usual rules, noms close 10 pm Sunday, youtube link and all that if possible.

Go get em :-)

Spacepig Pig | 1441 comments Ding dong!!! Time up, all over.

A close one this week alrighty, two songs sharing the top spot, but with a very impressive 4 max pointers, the winner, Tim, with Lump Street.
It looked for a while that Lez's own nom Old Old Fashioned was going to run away with it, but in the end, silver it is.
And squeezing on to the podium in 3rd place, Tech and Val with The Woodpile and Poke.

Like suzy, I think I was expecting a bit more, I dunno, ooomph from this band, but it just didn't materialise. I don't think that I am that bothered that I missed them when I had the chance to see them now.

message 23: by Tim (new)

Tim Franklin | 8579 comments Whilst it's always nice to win, I must admit to being somewhat underwhelmed too; I was on the verge of giving up even nomming when I put Lump Street on for a listen. ;-)

Tech XXIII | 6435 comments folk kinda tippy tappy round about bands that've suffered a death, particularly a recent one, but folk die sometimes - there's folk dying now that've never died before! i didn't really hear anything that you could separate from a thousand other bands, but hey ho, well done the winners, particularly me!

message 26: by Val (new)

Val H. | 13890 comments For me, the attraction is the lyrics - because they're honest, as well as poetic. Yes people die, all the time and for/from various reasons/causes. The difference this time was the manner of his death and that he presaged it ten years ago. I've recently been affected by the suicide of a young man (31) we knew and the detention of another friend (32) in a secure psychiatric ward. I have to believe we are making progress with the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness, but sometimes you wonder. And you can't help feeling guilty because of your powerlessness to do anything to make sufferers feel that life is worth living.

message 27: by Tech XXIII (new)

Tech XXIII | 6435 comments it's never very far away, val, junior's wife's brother recently took his own life. i don't think it's possible to imagine or measure the weight of the misery that ends in a decision to end your life. i feel it is equally the bravest/most cowardly solution.

Val H. | 13890 comments Tech wrote: "i feel it is equally the bravest/most cowardly solution. ..."

Agree with you there. I have to take some consolation knowing that the sufferer's life seemed so helpless that they are happier ending it. Ergo, they are no longer in agony and despair. I don't know if I could convince myself of that if it were my child. Maybe grief is equally selfish.

Sorry to read of your loss Craig...tough break. Having suffered depression in my life, when life got on top of me; so much so, that having fallen to such miserable depts...I did contemplate ending things, Fortunately, I managed to pull myself out of that particular dark place, and am now in very much better state of mind, especially now that I've had much needed improvements to my sight. And I did that without needing therapy or drugs. But thinking about suicide is world away from actually going through with it....such a shame he couldn't find the help he so clearly needed. Dealing with depression is such a difficult problem though....especially if one hides it from loved ones & friends.

Did he try to seek help, Craig?

message 31: by Lez (new)

Lez | 7490 comments I’ve known 11 suicides altogether, 4 of them under 30, 1 of them a friend, 3 work colleagues. Also 3 attempted, 1 of them a schoolboy, actually in the library.

there were a number of factors involved, but as often is the case, the actual act took place during a period of hope and positivity.
