Daniel Barger (daniel_barger) | 13 comments I was watching a rerun of The Golden Girls and saw this book that Blanche is reading. Does anyone recognize the cover? It looks like it might be a romance. Does anyone recognize it?

It's at the beginning. It doesn't show the title really clear. I was just wondering if someone recognized it by the cover.

Ebookworm2016 | 180 comments I did an internet search and found a “hardcore fan” quiz that said she was frequently seen reading “Lady Chatterly’s Lover”. But I’m not sure those letters fit the picture you posted.

It looks to me like the first and third words on the book cover are long--at least 8 to maybe 14 characters long and the middle word looks like it's only 2 or 3 letters long. So no idea on this one.

Ebookworm2016 | 180 comments Do you know what episode this is?

The Golden Girls has kind of gotten popular again and I bet there is a TV fan site that could help.

All the books listed as options on the quiz I found were classics, so have been put out many times over with different covers. “Gone With the Wind” was another option that didn’t fit the number of letters. Actually, none of the options fit the letters, but I don’t remember the rest. But, they were all classic romance stories that “fit” with her TV character.

Juels | 2427 comments I found a reference that Blanche has been reading the same red book for several seasons. It can probably be seen in other episodes. Maybe you can find a clearer image.

It was from the episode called Triple Play.

Rainbowheart | 16939 comments It might not be a real book. They put fake books in movies a lot, I would assume also on TV if they don't want to pay for the rights to show something.

Chrissie (chrissiewhitley) | 138 comments I tried to figure it out by watching the episode on Hulu, but it didn’t help. Either the focus is not sharp enough for the book title, and it’s all focused in Blanche (as she’d want), or it is indeed a fake book.

I really like the fake book Claire Dunphy reads on an early episode of Modern Family. Umbria in Autumn. I’d love coming up with prop books.

Shandra | 13 comments From the latest screenshots, I actually think it's one of the old classics which wouldn't require a license to release showing it on film as classics are "fair game" for anyone to showcase due to the copyright being expired, making the works part of the public domain. It seems more logical to me they'd use a real novel which is a simple cover, not under copyright, and easy to obtain rather than craft a fake book they'd potentially damage or lose or need to replace without being able to exactly match it on a do-over.

I've seen a lot of the old classics in simple red covers with title and author only and potentially some basic detailing. I think this one is possibly Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. It could also be The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton since I've got a copy of that one which is very similar without the dust jacket and the words "The Age" are on one line as if they're one longer word rather than two very short words.

I wish the images were sharper or that there was a way to sharpen the focus more.

Daniel Barger (daniel_barger) | 13 comments It looks like the first word might be Fruits and the middle word of. So something like "Fruits of"

Bonnie | 230 comments Could it be Pride and Prejudice?

message 22: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie (chrissiewhitley) | 138 comments That last one is a better screenshot. I can see where it could be ‘Fruits’.

But I’m not 100% sure it’s fiction she’s “reading.” If you look back at the episode, as she emerges from the kitchen, she turns the book’s open pages toward the audience. The page on the right looks more like a list, and the page on the left has some kind of graphic box inset near the middle of the page—either an image, a chart, diagram, or illustration.

Bonnie | 230 comments Fruits of Pleasure?

message 24: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1 comments I know this doesn't help but Dorothy was reading the same book in another episode!

message 25: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Barger (daniel_barger) | 13 comments So I was watching another episode of The Golden Girls and Blanche was reading the same exact book. I took some screenshots. Does anyone know what it is? I think the top of it says "Fruits" and the middle word is "of". Is it a fake book?

Gaby | 9 comments I've been googling and I noticed there's a plant reference book out there called "Fruits of Angiosperms" by Ingrid Roth which seems like a cheeky prop that could innocuously get past censors (and something Blanche might have grabbed for fun).
