They believe that all of Novel Kingdom exists on a single sheet of paper in a single book in the Great Reader's library. The head of the geography department is beside himself. Help him map out the world and prove that Novel Kingdom actually rests on the cover of a book laying on the Great Reader's coffee table.

Natasha | 816 comments Everybody Lies - Completed

You have a terrible rash.... well everywhere. It's itchy and scratchy and is stopping you from your love of murdering small fuzzy smelly sewer rats. You've been to Dr. Trowel over in Papeville and Dr. Winchester over in Novelette and even visited the local healing mage Mr. Smile. None of them were able to help. At your wits end you go over to The Academy Teaching Hospital to visit Dr. Cottage the best diagnostician in the region.

Dr. Cottage comes to the door, sneers at you and lets you in. You fumble with your hat then step inside.

"Ummm... Dr. Cottage.... I was told you would be able to help me with my rash. I haven't done anything to cause it!"

Dr. Cottage tells you to sit then storms out of the room. You look over to a whiteboard in the room with the words "signa, causae, curae" scribbled across the top.

Awhile later a young lady comes out and says "Hello, my name is Twelve... I mean Miriam. We think you have too much blood in your body. We're going to suck some out with leeches."

Treatment 1: (treatments must be completed in order)
Spell out the word LEECH by using Spell-It-Out Rules and read a book about blood sucking vampires.
L - Lower Ed: The Troubling Rise of For-Profit Colleges in the New Economy
E - Eats, Shoots & Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation
E - The Empty City
C - Chernobyl: The History of a Nuclear Catastrophe
H - Henry Plantagenet

Vampire Apocalypse: A World Torn Asunder - Book about vampires

Receive 2 Healing Potions for trying the leech treatment.

The last leech pops off with a *pop* after filling it's belly with blood. Shuddering you look at your skin and sadly you are still covered with rash but now have additional leech bites. Twelve comes back into the room. "Well... that wasn't the issue but we read your horoscope and you need some Gillyweed extract."

Treatment 2:
Gillyweed is a magical plant native to the Mediterranean Sea. Read a book set in a country that borders the Mediterranean Sea to find some.
To make the extract read a book on the list of crush books.
Finally, drink a lot of water to account for your new gills. Read a book where a large part of it takes place at sea.

Receive 1 Major Heal Potion for trying the Gillyweed treatment.

1. Conclave - Set in Italy
2. Thirteen Reasons Why - On page 24 of crush books
3. Moby-Dick, or, the Whale - Most of the book is spent on a ship at sea

After recovering from your bout of fishiness, Twelve comes in again. "I'm sorry, we've narrowed it down to your brain having too much evil and it trying to seep out of your skin. We're going to need to perform a trepanation. It's a simple procedure where we bore a hole in your skull to let the evil spirits out." Your eyes go wide. "Ummmmm" you reply. "Could we maybe just try the marigold rub I heard about?" Twelve sighs, "Ok, we can try that first but you're risking your life by leaving all that evil inside."

Treatment 3:
Read a book where the cover is bright yellow to collect the marigolds.
Then read a science book to bring medicine into the 15th century.
Finally rest a week to recover your health. (Resting one week prevents the adventurer from participating in battles but battle wait timers will still tick and quests may still be turned in.)
1. Death Comes to Pemberley by P.D. James
2. Nine Pints: A Journey Through the Money, Medicine, and Mysteries of Blood - science is the 1st mpg
Rest from 8/11/19 - 8/18/19

After receiving treatment 3 you're cured! Gain 8 experience and heal your hp to max.

Completed 8/18/19 - 8 exp and full hp

Natasha | 816 comments Lady Tea in Wonderland - Completed

Lady Tea is out walking and sees a rabbit darting through the woods. Thinking it may be one of the magical egg laying bunnies she sets off in pursuit. The rabbit darts into a hobbit hole on the edge of town. Never one to turn down a hobbit hole, Lady Tea pursues the rabbit. As soon as she steps inside she falls down a deep hole. She sees a tiny door and a bottle named "DRINK ME". She shrugs and downs the unknown concoction then starts to shrink to a tiny size! Looking around she sees a piece of cake labeled "EAT ME." Growing wise, she pockets a piece of it and heads through the door. On the other side she munches on the cake and returns to her previous size.

After stumbling around for awhile she sees the rabbit sitting at a table with a tea party set out. Smiling to herself she sits down deciding that tea is much better than what else may lay in this crazy world. Lady Tea hopes that others will be told about where she's lost.

Recount Lady Tea's story by reading a book with trees on the cover or one with short people (hobbits/dwarves/etc.) to set the scene. Then read a tiny book (100-150 pages) to tell about shrinking Tea. Read a big book (500+ pages) to tell about making Tea big again. Then read a book with a cup of tea on the cover or one where drinking tea is mentioned in the book to tell about the party. Lady Kelly will gladly pay you 10 gold for helping describe where Lady Tea is lost.

1. The Queen's Dwarf - tells the story of a dwarf
2. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz - 130 pages
3. Black Sun Rising - 595 pages
4. Engaging the Enemy - "the duchess' companion poured the tea"

Completed 12/20/18 - 10 gold

Natasha | 816 comments Sir Angel's Story - Completed

Since weather was beautiful and warm last few days, the heroes decided to throw a little bonfire party near some nearby woods. As it usually goes, after few ales and delicious drop bears steaks, it's time for scary stories. After a couple of pretty tame stories, Sir Angel thinks it's time to share her adventure... "...and then I entered the woods following Ser -- tracks. Luckily moon was full so I could see almost everything otherwise I'd have to wait till morning. I heard sound away from the path and when I looked that way I saw a man. It had to be Ser -- so I went toward him calling his name. I guess he didn't hear me as he continued walking and at one point I lost him as there was huge tree on the way. When I got to that tree, I froze." You look around and all heroes are sitting on the edge, listening carefully. "On the ground were Ser -- clothes, but he was nowhere to be seen. And going away from the clothes I could see paw tracks. Big paw tracks. And then I heard it...." You start biting your nails. "Howl! But not normal wolf howl. This one was terrifying! It made my blood run cold." Silence. "Don't you see?! It's obvious, Ser -- is shapeshifter!" Everyone (but you) starts laughing hard.

Read a book tagged as paranormal or fantasy, read a book with animal on the cover (preferably dog/wolf but not required), read a book with moon on cover or in title or series and read a book where someone goes through some change. Bring this collected evidence to Sir Angel so she can prove to other heroes she was telling the truth and she'll pay you 10 gold.

1. A Darker Shade of Magic - fantasy
2. The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein - dog on cover
3. The Night Ocean by Paul La Farge - moon on cover
4. What Alice Forgot - Alice wakes up without her memory and as it slowly comes back, has to decide if she wants to be like her 29 year old self, her 39 year old self, or some combination of the two

Completed 11/30/18 - 10 gold

Sometimes old things have value. An old coin preserves the history of the past. An old book preserves lore of the past. An old sandwich preserves.... well, most things have value.

Novel Kingdom is hosting it's first antique convention. You'd like to set up a booth to sell some of your older possessions in hopes that they're worth more than expected.

Sort your to-read list by date added. Gather 5 books that are either in the first 25 listed or that were added before 2015.

One of your antiques has hit gold! It's way more valuable than you thought. Receive 10 gold for your hidden treasure. Unfortunately, the others are more like sandwiches...

2. Red Queen - was #7 on my tbr
3. Mary Tudor: Princess, Bastard, Queen - was #22 on my tbr
4. The Sisters Who Would Be Queen - was #17 on my tbr

On the edge of town there is a strange house. Sometimes you wander past and ponder if some wizard drank too much mead and accidentally cast a growing spell on an old boot. The lady who lives inside is frantic because her cats have gone missing. She would like you to find all 7 of her missing cats.

To find a cat, find a mention of a cat in a book and quote the sentence where the cat is mentioned. Cats are individual creatures and there can only be one found per book. (Find Items Potion works for this quest.) Receive +5 Experience and 1 Heal Potion for finding all 7 cats.

1. How (Not) to Kiss a Toad - My cat rubbed his head along my arm - page 83

5. Chilling Effect - Sitting on the instrument panel, pawing at the manual control override, was the calico cat - page 7
6. Wuthering Heights - Nothing was stirring except a brindled, grey cat, which crept from the ashes, and saluted me with a querulous mew - page 24
7. The Thorn Birds - "Was it very bad, my Ralph?" the archbishop went on, smoothing his beringed milky hand rhythmically across the silky back of his purring Abyssinian cat - page 428 (take from the Kindle edition)

Natasha | 816 comments 5,000 Leagues Under the Sea - Completed

You've never been one to try to outdo everyone else. No one really needs to go a whole 20,000 leagues under the sea when 5,000 is plenty. You're quite sure after traveling 5,000 leagues that there's really nothing more that would surprise you down there. You've seen all the fish, sunken ships, sharks and mermaids that you could ever care to see in the sea. Just make sure to take some pictures so you can have a few rounds bought for you at the Tavern after you've returned.

Travel 5,000 leagues and take pictures! Reserve a wonderful spot at the tavern for all your stories.

Leagues may be traveled by reading books. To determine the amount of leagues traveled by a single book, round down to the nearest 100 pages, then calculate 2 to the power of the number of hundreds of pages. (Hint: use the xy button on the calculator)

Examples:
512 page book -> 5 hundred pages -> 2^5 = 32 leagues
1072 page book -> 10 hundred pages -> 2^10 = 1024 leagues

Reward: The tavern owner was so impressed with the number of additional customers your stories brought in he has provided you 2 Greater Heal potions for your effort. You also gain 5 experience for your travels.

5000/5000 leagues
Dynasty: The Rise and Fall of the House of Caesar - 512 pages - 2^5 = 32 leagues

Natasha | 816 comments Help Save Easter

Part 1: Discover the threat - Completed

You start hearing whispers of something terribly wrong while walking around town one morning. You hop over to the tavern to hear about the issue. The bartender wipes a tear from the corner of his eye and informs you that the Easter Bunny is missing! Find out all the information you can.

Pump the Bartender for Information - Done

You think the bartender knows more than he has said. You slide two coins across the counter. They disappear quickly and the bartender tells you about a local troll that has been terrorizing local villages in the region.

Read a book where someone drinks a lot or is a bartender and read a book where someone pays for something in gold or the book has a gold cover to pay the bartender for information.

1. Romancing the Dark in the City of Light - the main character has a drinking problem
2. The Temptation of Dragons - the main character pays gold for a dragon taxi

Talk to the Local Children - Done

The local children like to play just outside the gate and might have seen something. You don't want to upset them with the possible demise of their beloved spring hero so you decide to bribe them with a small toy to answer your questions.

Spell out the word TOY using spell-it-out rules to hear what the children saw.

T - Tales of Valhalla: Norse Myths and Legends
O - The One-Week Job Project: One Man, One Year, 52 Jobs (originally published in April)
Y - You're the Rogue That I Want

Talk to the Guard at the Gate - Done

Guarding the gate is a tough job, it's always opening and closing the gate and checking goods and warding off bandits. This day was particularly interesting for the guard since he noticed something off in the distance.

Read 2 books which feature restaurants or chefs to bring lunch to the guard and listen to him talk while you share the feast.

1. Pizza, Love, and Other Stuff That Made Me Famous - The main character works in her father's restaurant and is also on a teen cooking competition show
2. Killer Pizza - The main character works in a pizza place

Gathering all that information gave you little headache, stomachache and wish you could take a nap. Also you get 10 experience and 3 gold (you had those prepared for bribe).

Completed 6/21/19 - 10 exp and 3 gold

Part 2: Track the rabbit - Completed

The local children noticed something large stomping around the forest surrounding the town. They decided not to mention it to their parents for fear that they would be locked in their homes. The guard saw the Easter Bunny along the road collecting eggs for delivery on Easter. Talking to the bartender, you learn of a large troll that's been seen in the local area.

Putting together all your information in a truly brilliant fashion, you conclude that a troll probably has the Easter Bunny. Now, it's up to you to get him back!

Follow the Troll - Done

You figure your best bet for finding the Easter Bunny is to track the troll back to his lair. You do your best to creep along without alerting the troll to your presence.

Read 2 books where there are tracks or something hidden on the cover or where a main character is a hunter or tracker to track the trolls.
1. Red Dragon - Will Graham hunts down a serial killer
2. Echo of The Witch - Jai Axel hunts Shriekers

Find the Easter Bunny - Done

You managed not to step on any twigs (or at least any loud ones) and have located the troll lair. It's dank and dark and smells of wet troll. You muse that the trolls are remarkably unimaginative but conclude that that has never been an attribute often given to trolls. You see a small box made out of sticks containing the much loved Easter Bunny. You also see a small flock of prose peeps being held captive. You resolve to save them all.

Read a book with a farm animal on the front or one set on a farm or in the country to find the Easter Bunny.

The Cow with Ear Tag #1389 by Kathryn Gillespie

Spy on the Cave - Done

The troll lair is in a cave with a opening not much bigger than the size of a troll. They squat a bit each time they enter and exit the cave. You wonder how to see inside and wish slightly that some sort of x-ray machine exited. Remembering your alchemy lessons you set off to brew a potion of seeing.

Read a book with an eye on the cover, a book with an animal on the cover and a book with water on the cover. Shake and drink to see into the cave.
1. 2084 by Mason Engel
2. Buzz The Nature and Necessity of Bees by Thor Hanson
3. Ice Ghosts The Epic Hunt for the Lost Franklin Expedition by Paul Watson

Your brilliant tracking earned you 10 experience and 1 Potion Token.

Completed 11/26/19 - 10 exp and 1 Potion Token

Natasha | 816 comments Help Save Easter

Part 3: Make a plan - Completed

Map the Cave - Done

Any successful breaking and entering requires a detailed map of the site. You decide to use your potion of seeing to map out the cave so you can attempt a rescue and hopefully succeed without being turned into a pancake by angry trolls.

Read a book that is over 400 pages for some map paper, then read a skinny book under 100 pages for a pen. Read a book with the words (up, down, right, left, north, south, east or west) in the title to draw the map. The word may be part of a larger unrelated word (e.g. east in the word beast).

1. The Pandemic Century: One Hundred Years of Panic, Hysteria, and Hubris - 464 pages
2. Origins - 98 pages
3. When the Chips Are Down - down in title

Plan the Rescue - Done

Another critical part of any rescue plan is the plan. In fact it's nearly impossible to pull off a rescue just winging it by the cuff of your tunic. To make a plan first you need an idea, preferably a good idea, but if not an average or even slightly poor idea can suffice. Then that idea must take shape and eventually transform into a plan. You assume it has something to do with a chemical reaction in the idea but it may very well be just a trick of the light.

Read a book with a lightbulb on the cover or is in the non-fiction category to get an idea. Then make it take shape by reading a book with a simple shape clearly on the cover or in the title. (e.g. See cover of Zero: The Biography of a Dangerous Idea or Masks of the Illuminati). Finally, read a book with a main character who's a chemist, a steamy romance with romantic chemistry or a book with light in the title to transform it into a plan.

1. Walking to Listen: 4,000 Miles Across America, One Story at a Time - nonfiction
2. Aversion (The Mentalist Series, #1) by Kenechi Udogu - simple circle on cover
3. The Duke's Temptation - historical romance

Obtain the Supplies - Done

Your plan is coming together... you hope.... it just needs a few things to pull it off. Trolls like to eat, they also like to smash things. This is your main plan. You go off in search of the items to pull your plan together.

Read a book with a tree on the cover to gather some sticks. Read a book with food on the cover to gather a tasty treat. Hope that your plan is better than it sounds in your head by crossing your fingers.

1. The Hidden Life of Trees What They Feel, How They Communicate—Discoveries from A Secret World by Peter Wohlleben
2. Fast Food Nation The Dark Side of the All-American Meal by Eric Schlosser

Planning is always hard (and thirsty) work. You've earned 10 experience and 1 Heal Potion.

Completed 12/27/19 - 10 exp and 1 Heal Potion

Part 4: Execute the plan

Setup the Plan - Done

You lay out the plan in your head.
Step 1 - Sticks make box
Step 2 - Food goes in box
Step 3 - Dig large hole
Step 4 - Cover large hole with branches and leaves
Step 5 - Balance box on leaves
Step 6 - Wait for troll

You take a deep breath then setup your plan.

Read a book with a brown cover to dig a hole. Then read a book about construction or where a main character works in construction to setup the box.

1. Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl
2. Built: The Hidden Stories Behind our Structures - about the history of construction

Free the Bunny - Done

You wait off in the bushes at the side of the cave. The troll comes out. Sniffs around. You hold your breath. The troll takes out his giant club and WHACK! The box smashes open, the food sprays across the clearing, the leaves collapse, the troll is unbalanced and falls in the hole. You stare blinking at the clearing unsure of what you saw. Then quickly you recover and run inside to free the Easter Bunny!

Read a book about someone overcoming impossible odds. Miracles are way easier than you thought they were. Go buy some lottery tickets on your way back to town.

The Doctors Blackwell: How Two Pioneering Sisters Brought Medicine to Women and Women to Medicine - two sisters become doctors in 1800s (the older sister is the first female doctor to receive an MD in the United States)

Easter Omnibus Troll

You want to make sure troll is gone and it won't hunt poor Easter Bunny (and others) again.

Easter Omnibus Troll is close cousin to 'regular' Omnibus Trolls. Only difference is that his skin is all colored like Easter egg.
7 Attack 35 Health - Reward: 3 Experience, 1 Heal Potion.

Save Easter

You have saved Easter! The children rejoice! The dentists rejoice! The parent's groan with the added costs of new dental bills.

Take your victory lap and savor the outpouring of love. The Easter Bunny even leaves you some extra treats in your basket this year. Just remember not to trust the beans, you don't know where they come from.

Read a book where the family celebrates Easter or one with a rabbit on the cover. Enjoy your victory.

Yay! You saved the Easter Bunny and Easter! Hard work earned you additional 20 experience.
To thank you for saving him, the Easter Bunny gives you egg that can heal you 15hp. Good thing is it's huge egg so you can eat it in parts. It's good for 1 month after first bite.
