The Nominations are closed. The Poll is up.

https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/6...

I added some timing notes to the last post in this thread.

-----------------------
Please nominate a book that you would like to read/discuss in September (opening as early as August 15). We will also have some focused reads in September and October. The September focused read nomination will be posted in a couple weeks.

This is an open nomination, for ANY Great American Read book. Think about the GAR book that you most want to read in anticipation of the PBS show airing on September 11. Or nominate a book that you are most eager to DISCUSS soon.

The nominations will remain open until Sunday night and then I'll set up a poll.

You may nominate up to 4 books, and you do not need to rank order them in any way.

Yes it's absolutely OK to nominate a book you already read, as long as you are able to discuss it with the group. We do want the discussions to go deeper than "I loved it," which is sometimes all I can say about a book I read long ago.

Many of our members have read 5-10 GAR books this summer, so they might want to nominate one of those to discuss in depth.

As we get closer to the Fall PBS show, I think we'll want to discuss our favorites and the potential winners.

thank you. I did buy it -on kindle- to re-read, but I am reading so many for different groups now, the timing would depend on whether it was a book club choice.

No they don't have to be seconded. If you like someone's nomination you can put it on your own list too if there is room.

July 22 5pm - You have a few more hours to add or revise your nominations.

Here are the books that will be going into the poll so far.

The Picture of Dorian Gray - 5
Their Eyes Were Watching God 5
The Sun Also Rises - 4
Rebecca - 4

If you're not happy with these choices, you can revise your nominations tonight to give support to a book with only 2 nominations so far.

Please summarize your changes in a new post to ensure that I see it.

Thanks everyone!

The nominations are closed and the poll is up. I included the page numbers, so please be realistic when you vote.

https://www.goodreads.com/poll/list/6...

The discussion will be open August 15-October 1.

Note - 3 or 4 of the nominated books fall into our "big book" category. We also have a "big book" read planned for November 1 - Feb 1 (or longer if desired). If the group selects a big book now, we can adjust the dates as needed. [I'd be in favor of selecting future big reads far in advance, e.g. Count of Monte Cristo starting in November, War and Peace starting in February (or March), etc.]

Timing Note: The PBS show will run weekly from September 11 to October 25. Voting will end October 18, and the winner announced October 25. We will read the winning book shortly thereafter.

UPCOMING READS:

September Focused Read - Diversity Theme

October Focused Read - Horror Theme - Frankenstein

November - Big Book Read

November - Great American Read #1 book

December - A "light" book (something fun/funny, perhaps a children's book.
