Do you have to know about Russia to like this book?

I am a former graduate student in Russian History, so I can relate to many of the problems that Andrei faced. I am a hockey fan and a student of Russian literature. I really enjoyed the book, having been to Russia a couple of years ago. I am wondering if the readers who do not have my background enjoyed the book as much as I did?

I enjoyed the feeling of going home again and trying to make resolving with leaving grandmother and moving on. Also, the added dimension of Russian life was enlightening

Great book. The reviewer in the NYTimes Book Review didn’t like as much.

I'm not into hockey, I don't think I've ever read Russian literature, never been to Russia and history isn't my thing. I'm halfway through the book and I am loving every minute of it. I haven't put it down since I started this morning.
