Evening all.

Another World Cup over, (bladdy French!), another Wimbledon over (dunno which bloke wunnit, but congrats to Miss Kerber! ); so it's almost back to normal, just Mr Frooooommmm left, which I see he isn't leading for once...keeps crashing apparently!

Rightyhoo...we open up a new round of themes, and we start with Val's interesting concept, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder it seems:-

'A track that fits YOUR definition of pure, aesthetic beauty'

I think a little more clarification might be required from Val on this one, as I haven't a clue what to nom for this one. Are we looking for track titles featuring something beautiful, or can it be in the lyrics, Val? Does inanimate objects count? How about nature, people, pets?...sorry, i'm a bit lost on this one!

Anyway..for everybody else, noms and links in the usual fashion please, thank you.

Have a lovely week...looks like the good weather is holding up..but gee...I hope we some some rain soon..me garden is going yellow!

TTFN

Val H. | 15748 comments Hi Duke - words, lyrics, subjects don't really come into my idea for this theme. I'm looking for something in a piece of music/song which inspires you, lifts you to a higher plane, something you think is just sublime. A track that, if you're a non-believer, makes you think that maybe angels do exist. Something that transports you. If you can think of something beautiful - whether it's natural, like a field of waving daffodils or a sea view, or man-made like a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL or a Vermeer painting, then think of a piece of music that gives you that same feeling. Any genre is okay; you might think that Pink Floyd hit the aesthetic heights with one of their tracks. It's what makes you respond in your heart, soul or guts that's important. Hope that makes some kind of sense.

Mozetich is a Canadian composer, now aged 69. This is his gorgeous violin concerto. I first heard his 'El Dorado' late at night on Radio 3, was immediately hooked and I've since bought everything I can find of his, but quite a lot hasn't been recorded.
Please give it a go for at least the first 5 minutes!

had originally thought of snakefinger's 'i love mary', but that would be another morricone tune, so, although i try to keep away from nominating nick cave, this never fails to engender goosebumps, and live, it's emotional!

theDuke | 5784 comments Hi Val, thanks for lowdown...but still struggling with this alas, it could be that I just have a very literal outlook on life, and don't really 'feel' beauty in a piece of music as such...i'm rocker at heart..i generally just like feel good music! But I'll try and find something fitting.

Tech, your link only works if one signs in to YT, on account of 'inappropriate content!'

message 13: by Tech XXIII (new)

Tech XXIII | 6727 comments i'll change it if it offends any of the under 18s on here! or indeed anyone! if this is the case i will have to change the nomination as well, as it may dilute the aesthetic beauty of the piece!
mibbe 'innapropriate' refers to ray winstone in his breeks! :)

message 14: by Tim (last edited Jul 16, 2018 11:38PM) (new)

Tim Franklin | 9065 comments Tech companies set their 'inappropriate' filters at ridiculously low levels that even millennial snowflakes might be aghast at. I used to be on a forum where it was impossible to type the word 'grape' without it being censored. I'll let you work it out why for yourselves. 😨

message 15: by Tech XXIII (new)

Lez | 7490 comments I’ve got that album and love the song, never for a minute found it remotely offensive! We’ve put up lots of ‘rude’ stuff but that’s the first time I’ve seen an ‘inappropriate.... ‘ notice. Who decides these things? Is there a YT censorship panel?

message 18: by Tim (new)

Tim Franklin | 9065 comments It's very strange. There's loads of Game of Thrones videos on YouTube (extracts from the show, rather than fan speculation), some of which are sprinkled with the 'F' word, the 'C' word and many others. They stay up though. ;-)

Gordon (skiiltan) | 2940 comments I find this almost impossible. There are at least a hundred pieces/songs I'd like to nominate. I'll go with this - with apologies for the length - because the first time I listened to it in the dark (when I was about 24) it completely changed my life. Music had always been important to me but this took it to an entirely different level.

With classical pieces, it's always a question of whether you've found the definitive version. This one seemed pretty good, though I did wonder if the timpani was a little louder than it needed to be in places.
