Sandy | 2 comments I am wondering if these author profiles ought to be combined?

Sandy | 2 comments Thanks very much, Scott.

I had a feeling that I had submitted the same request once before so I checked my comments in this group and have found the thread — https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Since there appears to be at least one Goodreads user who prefers to use all four names for this author, it seems possible that the same scenario might repeat itself in a few more months. Would it help to cross-reference the two entries? Just a thought.

Scott | 24936 comments Was she ever published under the longer name? None of the books I looked at had it. So strange that someone would go to the trouble of separating them out and changing the name.

I guess a librarian note could be placed on the record telling people not to change it.

I made a quick (but not exhaustive) check of her books on The Internet Archive. They have her indexed by all four names but all of the digitized copies of her books that I looked at use only “Gertrude Atherton” as author.

Arenda | 22167 comments For public domain books, often the full name of an author is used on the cover, even when they didn't use that name when the books were published originally.

Here is an example with the full name on the cover: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
New books with the full name will be imported again.

Best way to handle is not to merge the profiles, but change the primary author to Gertrude Atherton, with the full name as secondary when it is on the cover.

ETA: I have recreated a profile for the full name, with a link to the actual profile, and a note not to merge them: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

Thank you for the information, Arenda, and for resolving the issues. Much appreciated.
