This thread is for nominations for YA category for August 2018.

YOUNG ADULT: This category is for books targeted at young adults, age 13-18. They should be newer books, published since 2000, starring a person in the YA age range. They must be currently in print on multiple platforms. They must be Space Opera, which means a spaceship has to be involved in the story somewhere. If it is part of a series, it needs to be suitable to being read without having read other books in the series.

RULES:
* you may nominate one book on this thread.
* you may second as many nominations as you like on this thread.
* it is okay to nominate the same book on more than one nomination thread, as long as it meets the criteria
* don't nominate a book we already have on our bookshelf
* If a book you nominate or second is selected, you are expected to post at least one comment about it on the thread about the book.
* In about two weeks, I will draw a book randomly, with each second being one raffle ticket for the book. That is, a book with three seconds (so four of us want it) will get three chances in the pool.

It is likely helpful if you know something about a book that has been nominated if you mention it in this thread, whether it is for or against the book.

NOTE: If no nomination is seconded, we will not have any pick for this category, and may seriously consider dropping it entirely.

I nominate Empaths (Pyreans, #1) by S.H. Jucha Empaths by S.H. Jucha. The main POV is a teenage girl, although sometimes the POV shifts to one of the adult characters. I enjoyed reading it and am about ready to reread it. Available as paperback, Audible, and Kindle. Not sure about other ebook formats.

Excerpt from official description, which is lengthy:
Captain Jessie Cinders faces a hazardous choice. The murderer of the governor’s nephew stands before him. But, the frightened teenager, Aurelia Garmenti, doesn’t resemble the commandant’s description of the vicious, hardened killer his security forces seek.

To complicate matters, Jessie’s mind has felt Aurelia’s mental powers. The girl is an empath, who escaped the domes below and rode the El car to reach the JOS, Pyre’s orbital station. This shouldn’t be possible. The century-old agreement between topsiders and downsiders forbids the domes to knowingly admit empaths.

A comic tale of a girl abducted from Earth and the crash of the starship with many aliens aboard.

We have just a few more days until nominations close. If no book gets seconded, we won’t have any YA pick, and I’ll just take it out of the rotation completely.

Nominations will close tomorrow. If neither book is seconded we will drop YA from the rotation for lack of interest.
