Teresa Walker Hi Folks ...my first post. British mysteries are of great appeal to me. I've recently read books by Stephen Booth, Elizabeth George, PD James & Elly Griffiths & am looking for some new authors. Any recommendations are appreciated. Many thanks!!

Faith | 350 comments There are too many to mention. I think every third person in the UK writes mysteries, but you might try Ruth Rendell, Nicholas Blake and Belinda Bauer.

Patty | 3077 comments Ruth Rendell's pen name Barbara Vine; stand alone psychological books.

Zoe Radley | 558 comments If you don’t mind mediaeval murders you can’t go wrong with Ellis Peters and her cadfael mysteries as well as Paul Doherty, I would start with the Mathilde of Westminster mysteries as there is only three in the series

Patty | 3077 comments How could I forget from the 1930s Dorothy Sayers and her Lord Peter Wimsey series!

Jacqueline Winspear and her Masie Dobbs series encompassing WWI & beyond.

Val McDermid Dr. Tony Hill: Criminal Profiler series.

J. K. Rowling, writing as Robert Galbraith: Cormoran Strike Series.

Carol (carolfromnc) | 13851 comments I recommend the Bryant and May series of mysteries by Christopher Fowler. They're especially great if you have any interest in London's history.

First in the series is Full Dark House Full Dark House (Bryant & May, #1) by Christopher Fowler .

Carol (carolfromnc) | 13851 comments Sharon J. Bolton has several stand-alones, plus she's the author of the Lacey Flint series. The first book in the series is Now You See Me (Lacey Flint, #1) by Sharon J. Bolton Now You See Me.

Sharlene Almond | 13 comments You can't go past Agatha Christie novels. Even the movies based on Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot are fantastic. Agatha Christie novels, in my opinion, will always stand the test of time; and are great psychological mysteries.

message 15: by Linda (new)

Linda (beaulieulinda117gmailcom) | 1483 comments I love Elizabeth George

message 16: by J.R. (new)

J.R. | 79 comments Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine top of the list. I'll second the motion for Ian Rankin and Ann Cleeves, too. Then there's Colin Dexter, John Harvey, Peter James, Reg Hill, Mark Billingham, Val McDermid, many, many more.

Paul Perry (pezski) | 233 comments Val McDermid & Ian Rankin, of course already mentioned. I'd also say you should read Christopher Brookmyre who is truly excellent - he's been called a "Scottish Carl Hiaassen" as he's often hilariously funny, but he is much darker, more violent and sweary. His books are also often very political.
