Hi the other moderators & I had a few suggestions

The Scapegoat by Daphne duMaurier
Decision at Delphi by Helen MacInnes
The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West

Does anyone else have any other books you would like to add? Books should have been first published between 1900-1980. & if you are able to lead that would be really great. My local library system stocks very little written in the 20th century now. :(

Once we have all our nominations I'll set up a poll.

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 758 comments Perhaps we might be ready for another Angela Thirkell? Wild Strawberries would be the next one. On the other hand, I can always reread Helen MacInnes!

Wild Strawberries is our August read, Abigail. 😊

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 758 comments Ah, sorry, I have been out of touch! In that case, I might nominate The Dean's Watch by Elizabeth Goudge.

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 1451 comments Yay! I do love my Thirkell, and have a decent, used (I.e., in one piece, no yellowed pages) copy. Maybe at some point we could try some E. F. Benson? The “Lucia” books are the most well-known, but he has written other books.

The Lucia books are interesting to compare to the Thirkell books and Miss Buncle - village life among the wealthier, or at least, “better born”, even if they’re broke or struggling, like Miss Buncle, and the “First World” problems they get up to (usually to do with their perceived financial difficulties). Miss Pettigrew, too. (Time period and life among fringes of the same social class, anyway).

How’s the recovery going? Wishing you pain-free peace, quiet and reading time!

I have a copy of The Dean's Watch & love Elizabeth Goudge, so that is an easy nomination.

@Susan. Do you want to nominate Queen Lucia I just picked up a kindle freebie if you do. :)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 758 comments Thanks, Susan, I'm coming along well! Have reached the point of chafing at my restrictions, while still enjoying the extra reading time.

Sure, I’ll be happy to nominate Queen Lucia! But I’ve never read the three suggested above, or Elizabeth Goudge, so it’s a win-win for me, no matter which we choose. I knew I’d learn a lot and try new authors with this group! Thanks, all, for being such a smart, well -read bunch!

Barb in Maryland | 519 comments Carol, please add 'The Dean's Watch' to the Ballot! I have never read that and want to--the group read would be just the prod I need to get me to do so.

A discussion from an old review of mine reminded me of one of my favorite Retro Reads: Mary O'Hara My Friend Flicka series. All three are superb. They tend to get incorrectly shelved as children's books. The three books, taken together are the story of a marriage, a coming of age tale, and a yarn about horses and Wyoming life in the post WW1 era. They are filled with glorious descriptions of mountains and sky and stallions fighting--and trains traveling endlessly to somewhere else. If we start with one I guarantee we'll want to read others, but let's put My Friend Flicka on the list for a vote, if not this month, then in October.

I've only got Green Grass of Wyoming so I'll put you down as the moderator for My Friend Flicka,Hana.

Edit; I have just found an area library has a copy of this title! :)

& I'll close nominations (& this thread) & put a poll up when I get back from a shopping trip. :)
