This thread is where you can chat about all things PIFM, ask questions and once books have been read, review your selected reads. A complete free for all.

PLEASE NOTE:

PIFM is meant to be FUN and not to be taken seriously. I would appreciate it if all participants just chilled and not get worked up about voting, who votes, who doesn't, etc. Please bear in mind that some will just want to vote, many don't come on everyday and most of us have time constraints. I just want a relaxed approach to it all and for you all to just enjoy the process! I'd really appreciate your courtesy in this matter. Many thanks.

Perri | 8 comments I haven't started my July selection yet, but it's only the second. I'm reading Voyager- a good summer read and long! Any other Outlander fans? I'm reading one each year and then watching the video.

You found me out! I may crazy for Outlander. I found the novel at a garage sale back around 1994. I opened to the mid section of the book, read a few paragraphs and decided it was worth 50 cents.
I’ve been hooked ever since and have met Diana Gabaldon and had her sign all my novels. Voyager is definitely a good one Perri.
I wasn’t as big a fan of The Fiery Cross, and it was the last one I’ve read, but I do own them all.

Perri, I'm WILD about Outlander! (And wildly in love with Jamie, lol!) Sometimes I find myself saying "Aye", instead of "Yes"!

message 10: by Perri (new)

Perri | 8 comments Melanie, I'm liking Voyager more than Dragonfly, especially when the focus stays on Jamie in Scotland. I do wonder with all the books and time passing, how old they must be in the later books? Minor Spoiler: Jamie just spent six years in a cave! How did he stay so fit? YOu MET GABALDON!?! Jelly me!

Aye, Val I ken ye verra well :)

message 11: by Valleri (new)

Valleri LOL, Perri!!!

message 12: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (meldoc) | 649 comments You are correct Perri..technically speaking they get quite old, and yet somehow through the magic of book writing they continue to remain young in their actions and adventures. Every now and then I question it...then I let it go and simply enjoy.
Diana has come to our local bookstore twice and both times she was lovely. The first time I met her was back in the 90’s and she was relatively unknown. There was only a small group of us chatting.
The second time was when she released “A Breath Of Snow And Ashes”. The crowds were lined up down the block. She didn’t have time to chat individually at that event, however she gave a 45 minute book talk about her writing process and how she came to write the Outlander Series.

Fun Fact: she was inspired by Dr. Who when looking for a writing element that would allow her to have “Claire” involved in her story(whom Diana said was a very well developed character in her mind, but simply did not fit her Scottish Rebellion Years setting)

Gabaldon didn’t not intend to write a time travel novel..she simply could not scrub Modern “Claire” from her vision.

message 13: by Perri (new)

Perri | 8 comments The magic of writing, ha, ha Melanie, so true, I'm generally able to let it go as well, but every now and again, I'm like 20 years! With five or more books to go! So Glad to hear Galbaldon was lovely as I imagined. Thanks for the background tidbits!

Val, Jamie and Claire just reunited...swoon!

message 14: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 6545 comments GOOD MORNING EVERYONE!

message 15: by Valleri (new)

Valleri Oh, Melanie! How fun to have met Diana!!! The only books I liked less than the others were The Fiery Cross and An Echo in the Bone. I LOVED Written in My Own Heart's Blood, and it seemed like the the perfect ending of the series to me. I hope #9 doesn't spoil that!! I don't get Starz so I buy the DVDs on eBay and watch them on my computer, so that I can swoon privately in my office, lol!!!! Ahh ... if only I could get old as actively as Jamie and Claire do. :D

Melanie (meldoc) | 649 comments Good Evening All...
I’m wondering if any of you have read Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn Sharp Objects

What did you think? I just saw the trailer for an HBO series based on this novel. I must say I really disliked the book. on the other hand I was not a fan of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn Gone Girl

But did enjoy the movie.

message 18: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 1166 comments I wasn't a great fan of Gone Girl, although I would look forward to seeing the movie since you recommend it.

I've read Sharp Objects and liked it. The only book of Flynn's I have liked. I intend to watch the TV series.

message 20: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 6545 comments Patricia I read the book called Gone Girl and I saw the movie and I thought both of them were good and Janet I thought the book called Sharp Objects was good and I want to see the tv show

message 21: by Perri (new)

Perri | 8 comments I haven't read Sharp Objects but have read Gone Girl and Dark Places, and yes Flynn sure does know how to go to some dark places! It's hard to say you like book with such unlikable characters, but I can see why it was so popular!

Couldn't stand Sharp Objects. (I mean at least I was able to finish Gone Girl, dreadful as it was.)

On the bright side, Amy Adams is in the dramatization and she tends to improve any project she's in.

I recently finished listening to book 1 (for the second time) so that I could move on to the rest of the series.

I haven't watched the series yet. Not sure if I want to sign up for the Starz subscription.

message 24: by Perri (new)

Perri | 8 comments Kirsten, my library owns the DVDs. Does your library allow you to request them on ILL?

I read the first one before I saw the show, and had a very different picture of Jamie, . At first I didn't like the actor they chose but of course now I can't picture anyone else

message 25: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) | 8365 comments No, not DVDs.

message 26: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) | 8365 comments I'll probably sign up for Starz eventually. I signed up for HBO-GO just for Game of Thrones... I signed up for Netflix for Stranger Things & The Crown... so I have proof my will is weak...

I totally agree with this, Perri!!!

message 28: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) | 8365 comments Sometimes the actor works out, sometimes they don't.

I love Dirk Pitt from the Clive Cussler novels and Matthew McConaughey just couldn't cut it for me. (And I tried watching Sahara.)

However, I draw the line at Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Stupid casting.

message 29: by Perri (new)

Perri | 8 comments Kirsten, can you suggest your library buy them? They get checked out regularly here. Also, maybe buy the season if you're on Amazon Prime. Val, how do you watch them? Do either of you know Poldark? I've heard it's somewhat similar.

Tom Cruise as Reacher just boggles the mind!

message 32: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 6545 comments Aww Amy I hope everything is ok

message 33: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (meldoc) | 649 comments Tom Cruise bought all the rights to the Reacher Series on Film and...cast himself. I saw this in an entertainment interview. I agree with all of you..NOT at all the character described. My husband started reading the Reacher books after we went to the movie. He loved the movie so much. I couldn’t get past atom Cruise. When the next movie came out I had to think of it as a totally “new” and “Reacher unrelated” movie. Sounds silly I know, but good writing is good writing so helped me enjoy the movie.

I have Outlander on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

message 34: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 6545 comments I’m not a big Tom Cruise fan

message 35: by Perri (new)

Perri | 8 comments Aww, Amy we miss you too!

Melanie, I guess movie magic is like the magic of writing. Cruise is something like 5'2" but he never looks that short in film. My problem is watching the Reacher flick, I keep thinking Cruise, Cruise. Maybe because Reacher is more action than personality? But then so are a lot of action movies. It would have been great to cast an unknown, but I know Cruise probly draws more $

Just starting my July Don't Run book

message 38: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) | 8365 comments I categorically refuse to watch Cruise as Reacher. Cruise is annoying on a regular basis. But as Reacher? Lee Child really disappointed me by allowing this.

message 39: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 6545 comments I agree with you Kirsten

message 40: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (meldoc) | 649 comments Not to bashTom Cruise..but he was raving about the Reacher books and saying how he loved the series...ummm...dare I say (whisper) a bit narcissistic?
Oh well...I will continue to read the novels and enjoy them.
I wasn’t a fan of the Outlander Casting of Jamie either, but I grew to see him in that role.
Are there any Harry Bosch Fans here? It took me time to see Titus Welliver as Bosch too.

message 41: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (meldoc) | 649 comments I thought The Child would be popular among voters. It clearly is NOT. Is it because of the books I have it up against? I know that The Good Girl is very well liked. Interesting to see that early on votes were very evenly split. For some time each of the chosen books had only one vote.

Christine...what book do you think I should read?

message 42: by Christine (new)

Christine Hatfield (christinesbookshelves) | 6545 comments Melanie I think you should read The Good Girl because that was a good book

I like Tom Cruise as an actor... I hate him at 6 Foot 5 blond haired Jack Reacher !!

Lee Childs said he was happy, yes for the money !

Perri | 8 comments Melanie, I do like the Bosch series. and I thought Titus was great casting. He always looks so depressed-haha. But I must admit, I ddin't have a picture in my head about Bosch, and I've never seen Titus in any other role,.

I wasn't crazy about The Good Girl, but I usually rate a bit more leniently with debut authors. Never heard of The Child

Have you started watching the GOT shows? I read the first book right before it became so popular and didn't understand not to get attached to ANYONE, so I stopped. Now I think I might just watch the series and skip the books.

Wrong thread again, Christine! This is the CHAT thread. Not the voting thread.

Tonya: The whole series of books is way too damned rapey for me. Plus, Professor Tolkien had some really good insults about it in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAAp_...
