Mary | 203 comments I'm very excited about tonight's season premiere of one of my favorite tv shows - Mad Men. I especially enjoy the late 1950's/ early 1960's setting and I've read some memorable novels that take place during this time - Monkeys, On Green Dolphin Street A Novel, works by John Cheever etc. I'd love to add some more to to my list. Any recommendations?

Suzanne (bellamy22) | 610 comments I am seeing this show everywhere ... even spoofed on a re-run of SNL last night !!!
I've never watched it, if it is showing tonight it might interfere with 'True Blood', which I am totally crazy over !!!
Being young in the sixties, my only thought about books would be the odd Elizabeth Enright, or Edward Eager ... then comes Woodstock and more craziness ...
So, I am no help, but I might give your show a try , at least I'm looking forward to more of your comments very soon !!!

Donna | 137 comments Telex from Cuba A Novel. Set in Cuba in 1958 just before Castro comes to power, the story revolves around the lives of the executives of the United Fruit Company and their families.

A guy at work just told me about this show, I think I will DVR the premiere and see if I like it. As for something to read that is set in that time frame.... hmmm... Im going to have to dig...

Suzanne, another True Blood fan here! Last weeks episode was AMAZING!

Rauf Mary, I also enjoy Mad Men. It's got some seriously great lines..

("I just want to sit at the movies and cry", "We've got a lot of bricks but I don't know what the building looks like", "Nothing changed. We're just pretending", "Old Gold's man, huh? Lucky Strike here", etc.)

Mary | 203 comments It may conflict with True Blood - it's on @ 10pm on AMC - however it is re-run quite a bit during the week. Check the AMC website for the schedule I agree with WHRauf, it's very well written.

Donna,
Telex from Cuba A Novel looks great. I have added it to my list. Thanks

Brenda | 266 comments Hello Mary: I'm just catching up with this thread now, I've never seen Mad Men, (I assume the Mad is for Madison Ave?) so this book may not be quite what you're looking for but ... I have a great recommendation for a novel about the 1960's. It's called Crazy in Alabama by Mark Childress. It takes place in Alabama, but it is such a quirky, unique book about a woman trying to get to Hollywood to appear on TV (The Beverly Hillbillies) and her nephew, who is caught up in the civil rights movement. Funny and sad, it will make you laugh and cry.

Hi Brenda,
Crazy in Alabama looks great! Combines my love of all things 60's and the south. Thanks for the rec.

I've never read the book but the movie with Melanie Griffith was very good. Now that I know there's a book, my TBR shelf will be increasing again.
