I hope to keep up this month.

From this reading, I wonder what happened to Vincent. Also, what will Henry's family think, now that Lucy is dead.

This book has my attention so far.

Vincent is in Chicago – his two weeks has extended to many. He keeps extending his stay. Tess is wondering if he is seeing someone is Chicago. Her friend Gina is encouraging this thought. Gina’s fiancé is off fighting in the war so Tess shouldn’t be complaining. It is now mid-October and Gina encourages Tess to go and spend the weekend with her in Washington DC. Tess finally gives in.

Tess and Gina took the train to Washington. They were going to stay at Gina’s aunt’s boarding house. There were two men staying there and she didn’t usually mix men and women at the house but Gina told her it would be OK as the Aunt would be chaperone. When they got there, they found a note on the door saying the Aunt was called away due to a burst pipe. Tess was hesitant but Gina said they would be OK. They met the men, Roger, older and outgoing and Henry younger and quiet. Gina flirted with Roger a little. The girl went out exploring for the day and when they returned to the house to change for dinner, the men were getting ready to go out. They invited the girls along. Gina agreed for the both of them. They had multiple spytinis at dinner as well as wine. Tess was pretty drunk by the time they got back to the house. Roger followed Gina up the stairs fliting all the way. Tess was happy to hear Gina turn him away at her door and then heard two separate doors closing. Tess went to go upstairs and stumbled. Henry caught her and took her up to her room where he proceeded to take advantage of her. He told her she should have said she was a virgin. He left he after he was satisfied. Tess didn’t quite know what happened. She never wanted to see him again.

When Tess got back to Baltimore, she drove across town to go to confession at a church where the priests didn’t know her. The priest pretty much condemned her and as part of her penance told her she has to tell her fiancé. This was something Tess could just not do. It was the first time she could not complete a penance.
A little bit later, she had missed a couple of periods and went to a doctor out of town to confirm her suspicions. She was pregnant. She gotten a call from Vincent tell her he had a paid position in Chicago for a couple of months and for the first time, she encouraged him. He would be home for a few days at Christmas and would see her then.

The visit with Vincent didn’t go well. She said she had a headache the whole time. She finally told Gina she was pregnant and they had enough money for her to get an abortion. She made it to the appointment but she couldn’t do it. It was a sin she couldn’t live with. She decided that she would break off her engagement to Vincent and raise the baby on her own. She needed money for this. She went to Hickory, North Carolina to find Henry and get the money she would need to support her and her baby. She took the train to NC and found Henry and told him her predicament. He was reasonable. He told her to get a room and rest and he would contact her that night or the following morning.

Tess got a call at 9 AM the next morning saying Henry was there waiting for her. He decided that what they needed to do was get married. That caught Tess of guard. She asked if he had a girlfriend. He said it was the right thing to do and that she was carrying his heir. He was going to have a house built but in the mean time they would live at the house he grew up in with his mother and sister. He had a huge diamond ring for her but she didn’t wear it. She was to go home, get a blood test, get her things and come back. He told her she and the baby would live comfortably and want for nothing. She went home still in shock and told her mother. That didn’t go well, she guessed that she was pregnant and disowned her called her a tramp. She wrote the hardest letter of her life for Vincent and would mail it as she left town.

Tess was at Gina’s and had tried to call her mother several times. She wouldn’t answer. She can’t believe her mother kicked her out. She got a call from Vincent in the middle of the night. He told her that her mother had died and Mimi found her. He was trying but couldn’t get a train home. He wanted to be there for her. They had the funeral for her mother and Tess wondered if Henry would ever call. Finally, Henry called and wanted her to come Wednesday and they would get married on Thursday. She said it was too soon, she had to clean out her mother’s things. Then Vincent called and said he was able to get a reservation for Friday. She had to be gone by then and left her letter and ring on the table. She went to North Carolina and Henry drove her straight to the Justice to get married. She was met with hostility there as Henry (Hank) was the most eligible bachelor. They got married. Henry barely gave her a peck. She didn’t know how she would handle the wedding night.

They drove to a hotel for the night. She wore blue negligee that Gina bought her when she and Vincent got engaged. Henry told her she looked lovely and asked if she like to read before bed. She said she did. They read for about half an hour and then he turned off the lights and rolled away from her.
The next morning at breakfast, he told her about her mother and sister and how they were not happy about the wedding. His mother had other plans for him. She asked him about Violet Dare and he told her that he had know her since they were children and the town expected him to marry her but no, he wasn’t engaged to her. He told her his mother could be difficult and his sister, Lucy was spoiled. They went to the house and he introduced her around. She was not use to having servants and would have to stop excusing herself every time she left a room. His mother was polite to her but Lucy barely said two words. His mother was not happy that she was Catholic and not Baptist and said she would have to convert, Henry agreed and said the baby would be raised Baptist. Henry seemed honestly excited about the baby.

Tess woke up to hear Henry and his mother talking outside the door. Ruth called Tess a gold digger and told Henry he gave her the diamond ring to give to Violet not this tramp. She also guessed that Tess was pregnant. Henry told her not to worry about it.
Tess wrote a letter to Gina telling of her woes. She also wanted to know what was going on with Gina but asked her not to tell her about Vincent. Although he was in her heart, she needed to forget about him.
Tess went to her first service at the Baptist Church. She felt uncomfortable and felt that everyone was looking at her. She was introduced to some of the people after services. She figured out who Violet Dare was as she received icy stares from her. Lucy went over and joined that group. The Reverend came by and met her asking what Baptist church she went to in Baltimore. When she said she went to Catholic Church, he wanted to sign her up for Bible Study.
The next day, Ruth and Henry went to work at the Furniture Store and Lucy was spending the night at a friend’s (probably Violet’s). Tess was alone and she had a good cry. Hattie came by and asked if she was missing her mother. Tess said yes and Hattie told her she should talk to a Reverend that can talk to the spirits of the dead. Tess didn’t believe in that but didn’t want to offend Hattie as she was the only one in the house that was nice to her.

Tess took a taxi to town and went to the public library and saw the book “A Tree Grown in Brooklyn” and remembered her mom had the book on the nightstand when she died and she was almost through with it. She rented to book to read so that she could feel closer to her mom. She was looking for a taxi and saw a bus going to the town Hattie told her Reverend Sam lived it and got on. She was the only white person on the bus. She found the house and Reverend Sam talked to her mother. Her mother said she loved her and told her to finish the book for her. Reverend Sam had no idea what it meant but Tess did. She enjoyed visiting with him, thanked him and left.

Ruth was having a Ladies of the Home Front meeting at her house and Henry wanted Tess to go. She went and then found that Violet and her entourage were there. The group was a against the women who were going to work while their husbands were at war and how unladylike they were. There was one lady that had a niece that was a nurse and Tess wanted to ask her about it when Ruth pulled her away and hold her that the girl who was a nurse was a party girl and is that what she wants everyone to think she was. She wasn’t going into nursing. She talked to Violet after the meeting and Violet told her that Henry told her all and that maybe if she put out, Henry would have married Violet instead.
Tess was not happy about Henry telling Violet that she was pregnant (after all he told her to not let anyone know). My guess is Violet will tell the whole town. Henry just said he had to tell her something.
Tess wrote to Gina. She told of the meeting with the ladies, the visit with Reverend Sam and about being followed when she went to the post office.

The day after Tess wrote her letter to Gina, she woke up in the middle of the night to find that Henry was gone. She looked all over the house and outside, found his car gone. She went to ask Lucy and she said he was probably at the factory. When she confronted him the next morning, he said he was at the factory and that she shouldn’t worry. She asked if he could at least tell her when he wasn’t going to be there. He said he didn’t know until after she was asleep, she asked him to leave her a note. She said she wanted to see the factory. He said he would show her Sunday after service.
After the service on Sunday, Violet’s father confronted Hank, and totally ignored Tess even when Hank introduced her as his wife. He accused Hank of using his decision in his case against his friend to break his daughter’s heart. They got in the car with Ruth and Lucy and Ruth talked about the box lunches they were going to make. Tess was happy about this and was looking forward to cooking a meal. She volunteered to go shopping the next day if Ruth made a list.
At the Furniture shop, the met Zeke who lives there. Tess was expecting a cot but he had luxurious furniture and a nice room. Zeke said he was happy to see Henry and told him about a boiler problem and they went down to the boiler room. They talked and worked on the boiler and laughed (first time she heard Henry laugh) while Tess roasted in the background. As they were leaving, Tess over heard Zeke and Henry talking and how they had a plan and that she had ruined it. She started to ask Henry but he got irritated at her when she asked questions.
The next day after her shopping trip, Tess went to see Reverend Sam again. He didn’t contact her mother but they did talk and she told him all that was bothering her. She felt better after that.

I wonder (as I have a while) if Henry is gay and he is using the marriage as a mask for his personal life. It’s not as if he every really touched Tess, even when he impregnated her. He just went through the motions. I wonder if he has a thing going with Zeke which would be extra scandalous for him as not only is Zeke a man but he is black.

When Tess got back from Reverend Sam’s the mail was on the floor and she got her acceptance letter to take the Nursing Exam. Now she just had to figure out a way to get there for the three days. Tess worked with Ruth and Lucy to decorate the boxes that Henry brought home and to make the dinners. While they were cooking, Henry came home in a foul mood. His friend Gaston, who married a black woman, lost his case and was going to have to leave Hickory or go to jail.
They next day was the auction for the box lunches. Tess didn’t think anyone would buy her box as no one in town liked her. She was mistaken, Judge Dare, Violet’s father bought her box for $100 with the stipulation that she enjoy the luncheon with him. He insulted and insinuated things until she had had enough and called him out. She said got his moneys worth of insulting her and she asked about his work. He seemed to respect her for that.

It was Sunday and her last outing to church which she was happy about. The service was boring and she ended up thinking about Vincent. They drove over to Amora’s to give her and he family the left overs from the box lunch. She was nice and came out to meet Tess but Honor ignored her. Henry said she needed to go shopping to get some new clothes. She thought to ask Lucy if she wanted to go with her but Lucy let it all out. How she wanted nothing to do with Tess and how Tess had messed up the plan. Tess went shopping by herself at the department store. The salesgirl knew who she was and kept looking at her middle. She bought a couple of dresses and was going to ask Henry if there was some other town she could shop in. He didn’t come home that night.

A few days later, the dresses that Tess bought arrived and Ruth sent them back. She was upset that she told the clerk at the store about her condition. She said she didn’t and if the clerk knew, it was probably Lucy as she was her friend. Ruth didn’t want to hear that. She got distracted about the fight when she saw a letter from Gina. She grabbed the letter and ran upstairs.
In the letter, Gina told her that Vincent was seeing a nurse where he worked. Tess was upset but she was happy for him and hoped the new girl treated him better that she had. She visited a Catholic Church in the area.
The nursing exam was a couple of days away and she didn’t know how she would get out of the house but she was determined to go. She ended up leaving a note for Henry early the day of the exam and took a cab to the train station. Henry showed up and said he would drive her to Winston-Salem to take the exam if it was something she needed to do but he still didn’t want her to work. They stayed for the whole exam. Henry told her he wanted her to be happy and knows that he is not a good husband. After the exam, she felt good about it and as they were going home she had to figure out what to tell Ruth about what she did while he was working. The exam would be their secret.

Tess wrote Gina telling her she wanted out of there marriage. Henry didn’t love her and with the baby gone, there was no reason to stay. She asked if she came back to Baltimore if she could stay with Gina and her mother until she found a job. She went to the library to do research on divorce and annulment.
Tess was meeting Henry the next day at the house. She decided on talking to Henry about getting the marriage annulled. The talk didn’t go well. She used the fact that they never consummated the marriage as reason. The next night Henry went into her room and consummated the marriage.

Part 2 – Tess wrote a letter to Gina telling her what happened and how Lucy was dead and it was her fault. She woke up and was brought to the police station, wet and shivering. She asked about Lucy but no one would tell her anything. Henry showed up to take her home but would barely look at her. She told Gina that she would look for a job somewhere, move away and after two years try and get the divorce. No one wanted her around anyway even though Henry did consummate the marriage.
Henry didn’t talk to her until that night and told her to stay away from Ruth. She was not allowed to go to the funeral either. She was by herself in the house during the funeral and she felt Lucy presence there. She locked herself in her room and fell asleep. She woke when people were arriving at the house. She was told to keep away from Ruth. No one was talking to her and they all stared. She wanted to be useful so went to help offer h’ordouvrs. Ruth say and started yelling at her. Henry sent her to her room. That night she brought up the subject of divorce but he didn’t want to talk about it. He told her they would be out of the house in a month if she would meet with the interior designer.

Tess waited for Ruth and Henry to leave the house before going down for breakfast. She felt Lucy’s presence again was afraid to be upstairs. Hattie treated her kindly and asked if she had seen their friend (Reverend Sam). Hattie told her to not let Ruth drive her out. She hadn’t but thought it would be a good idea. She could take the money for Butchy’s headstone. She went to the bank, got the money, took a cab to Adora’s house. Honor wanted nothing to do with Tess but Her daughter welcomed her and Adora sat with her awhile and told her that she was glad the Henry married her instead of Violet. She could tell that Tess was a nice girl, not so much Violet. Tess left and went to see Reverend Sam. Lucy made her appearance and Tess tried to apologize and Sam told her Lucy was at peace. Then he saw Andrew, and Tess broke down and least some acknowledged the baby. She saw and Sam was tied and left.

Tess tried to apologize to Ruth for upsetting her after Lucy’s funeral and Ruth said she shouldn’t have made a scene, it was the wrong time. (the closest thing to apology that Tess could expect). Henry came home in high spirits and announced that they were going to build a polio hospital in Hickory. They went to a meeting about it and volunteers were asked for. They needed nurses and Tess wanted to volunteer. Neither Ruth nor Henry liked that idea and told her to do something else. Ruth told her Violet was collecting record players for service men. Tess said she has skills Violet doesn’t. Tess was upset with them and went to see Reverend Sam. He said that Walter (her spirit guide) said she should do it. It would save children’s lives as well as her own.

Tess took the car and drove all over to get donations and deliver them to the makeshift hospital. While she was there a couple came with their son saying they needed to see a doctor. The son was sick. Tess stepped forward and told them she was a nurse and took charge. She told the couple she didn’t think the child had polio but that he ate too much of what they were picking. She sent them to the doctor to confirm. Henry saw all this went down and told Tess he was impressed and that she should be a nurse and that he would deal with his other. She silently thanked Walter.
Tess reported the next day as a nurse and they started to get patients. She had certain patients assigned to her and she shifted off with another nurse. She got to know her patients and was sad to leave them at the end of her shift. She was in her element.
Tess wrote to Gina about life as a nurse. She loved it and was the happiest she had been since moving to NC.
