The Kitchen House This book generated a great deal of discussion among our group of ladies. It was sad to read about how a little girl's life was affected by circumstances beyond her control. First her parents die crossing the ocean causing her to become an orphan, then she is placed in the kitchen house of the captain, who has just lost his indentured servants...the child's parents. Being white, she doesn't belong in the slaves quarters, but she doesn't belong in the big house either. As she grows her loyalties to the slaves who raised her and the family who she ultimately becomes a part are tested and stretched beyond belief.
