Why does Amir believe "maybe this was my punishment, and perhaps justly so" after finding out he and Soraya can't have children? (Chapter 13)

I would assume because of what happened when he was a kid and didn't help his friend when he was being attacked. I think a lot of this book and how he is as an adult is the result of his guilt, whether he admits it or not. Some things we cannot forget throughout our lives and it truly haunts is in everything we do.
