The protagonist solves the mystery. It turns out that Miles was best friends with the grumpy neighbor when they were young. One night, Miles had the friends' combined money, but he was being followed by some bad guys. Miles quickly buried it under a tree before the bad guys caught up. For many years, the neighbor thought that Miles had betrayed him when he never returned with the money. The protagonist discovers the money, which clears Miles' name.

The Ghost of Dibble Hollow
May Nickerson Wallace, The Ghost of Dibble Hollow, 1965. The ghost, Miles Dibble, buried the money under a tree because he was being chased by thieves. They chase him to a river, where he is killed and his body swept downstream, and the money was never found. At the end, the boy's family makes peace with Miles' old friend (a neighbor - I think he had a grandchild who was friends with the boy) by finding the money.
