... our stretch of canal was the saddest, loveliest place on earth.
"Home, I whispered.
is where the river flows humming through the willows.
Home is milkweed in your hair,
with hemlock moss your pillows.
Home, if you could only know,
is anyplace I see you ---
it's in your heart
and from the start
I've known my home would be you."

"When I was little, you recited that poem. I couldn't hear it often enough. Ever since I needed to remember that I had the best friend, the best home in the world, I recited your poem. It always helped."
"You have a friend?" he asked, as simply as a boy.
"The best friend a girl could have." I took his hand the way he used to take mine. "The old man who brought me around the world and made a home for me."

Nina | 6069 comments That makes me want to read the book. Did you know my granddaughter has taught in Vietnam for eight years? She is married to a young man who is half Vietnamese and half Chinese and was born and raised in England. They have a two year old daughter born in the US who is named after me/Nina..

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Yes, the book, Zazoo by Richard Mosher, is so very touching. I'm listening to it and I would suggest that's the better way to "read" it because the voice of the little Vietnamese character who narrates is absolutely precious!

See my review at:
I keep adding to it.

About your Vietnamese relatives, I have a young Chinese niece. My American nephew met his Chinese wife through the Internet. They married and have a beautiful baby who looks very much like her pretty mother. They live near my sister now.
