1. Highway 61 Starting Place: Duluth
Commercial Photography We begin our trip in Duluth, an important port city on Lake Superior. Each year hundreds of ships enter this port by way of the impressive Aerial Lift Bridge. Watch how the gargantuan counterweights slowly descend, raising the 900 ton bridge nearly 140 feet in the air to allow the huge ore boats to pass into the harbor. It’s a sight to behold. Learn the area's shipping history at the Lake Superior Maritime Museum.
✱ Read a series #6 or #1 OR read #61 from your TBR OR read a book with 6 AND 1 in the total page count.

2. Drive 27 Miles from Duluth to Two Harbors
Commercial Photography Head north to the quaint community of Two Harbors. Plan on visiting the Two Harbors Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in the state. Then take a walk along the breakwater. It’s amazing to watch one of the big ships come in to the ore dock. On your way out of town stop by Betty's Pies for something sweet to eat.
✱ Read a series #2 or #7 OR read #27 from your TBR OR read a book with 2 AND 7 in the total page count.

3. Drive 13 Miles from Two Harbors to Gooseberry Falls State Park
Commercial Photography Gooseberry Falls State Park is home to 18 miles of trails that thread through a green and silver tapestry of birch, aspen and spruce. It's also home to the state's most famous waterfall. Bring a camera for this Minnesota classic.
✱ Read a series #1 or #3 OR read #13 from your TBR OR read a book with 1 AND 3 in the total page count.

4. Drive 2 Miles from Gooseberry Falls State Park to Iona's Beach
Commercial Photography As you leave the park watch for mile marker 42 for one of the most unique beaches on the North Shore. Iona’s Beach has a distinctive pink hue of rhyolite and felsite bedrock stone which make a “tinkling” sound as the stones are moved by the waves. It's completely magical.
✱ Read a series #2 OR read #2 from your TBR OR read a book with 2 in the total page count.

5. Drive 5 Miles from from Iona's Beach to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park
Commercial Photography After six ships were wrecked in the area, a lighthouse was built atop this 100 foot cliff. Completed in 1910 the octagonal structure has become one of the most photographed lighthouses in the US. From the top of the lighthouse, the sparkling waves of the lake are nothing short of breathtaking. This historic site is surrounded by a 2,000 acre park with a beautiful lakeshore picnic area.
✱ Read a series #5 OR read #5 from your TBR OR read a book with 5 in the total page count.

6. Drive 10 Miles from Split Rock Lighthouse State Park to Black Beach
Commercial Photography Next we check out secluded Black Beach in Silver Bay. Over 25 years ago the taconite mining in the area dumped unusable taconite into the lake which colored the beach with the distinctive black color of the ore. Brilliant rust color cliffs line the landscape, and visitors can clip to the top of the cliffs for a view up and down the shore.
✱ Read a series #1 or #10 OR read #10 from your TBR OR read a book with 1 AND 0 in the total page count.

7. Drive 2 Miles from Black Beach to Palisade Head
Commercial Photography Palisade Head is a go to spot for artists, rock climbers and sight-seers. Formed a billion years ago by lava flow that pushed the rock outward into the lake, the massive rock formation rises 932 feet above the shore. The view from the top is spectacular. And if you visit during the summer months you will find amazing fields of wild blueberries to pick for a great afternoon snack.
✱ Read a series #2 OR read #2 from your TBR OR read a book with 2 in the total page count.

8. Drive 3 Miles from Palisade Head to Tettegouche State Park
Commercial Photography Tettegouche State Park is often overlooked but its 9,000 acres encompass four lakes, undisturbed groves of northern hardwoods and the Baptism River whose 70 foot falls are among the highest in the state. Tettegouche Camp, on Mic Mac Lake, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features four hike-to cabins for a great “get away from it all” vacation.
✱ Read a series #3 OR read #3 from your TBR OR read a book with 3 in the total page count.

9. Drive 20 Miles from Tettegouche State Park to Temperance River State Park
Commercial Photography The 5,000+ acre state park is a little slice of heaven, featuring the only lakeside campsites in the area, spectacular waterfalls, and a forest filled with birch, pine and cedar. The Temperance River is one of the most geologically interesting spots along the North Shore. The ancient waterway, shows the visible evidence of water shaping the rocks and gorge over millions of years. A short walk takes you to a footbridge that provides a beautiful view of the river.
✱ Read a series #2 or #20 OR read #20 from your TBR OR read a book with 2 AND 0 in the total page count.

10. Drive 11 Miles from Temperance River State Park to Lutsen
Commercial Photography Lutsen is home to the Midwest’s largest and tallest ski area that offers alpine skiers and snowboarders 92 sweeping runs over four mountains. ✱ Read a series #1 or #11 OR read #11 from your TBR OR read a book with 1 in the total page count.

11. Drive 9 Miles from Lutsen to Cascade River State Park
Commercial Photography The epic waterfalls at this park make it one of the most visited parks in the state! The well-named Cascade River stair-steps to Lake Superior through five separate waterfalls, whose constant spray spikes sunbeams into rainbows. This moist environment sustains an abundance of delicate mosses, pale orchids and white cedars that shade the slippery rocks. Hiking through the park you feel like you’ve landed in a jungle.
✱ Read a series #9 OR read #9 from your TBR OR read a book with 9 in the total page count.

12. Drive 8 Miles from Cascade River State Park to Grand Marais
Commercial Photography Once a harbor teaming with French Canadian fur traders, Grand Marais is now alive with fishing charter boats and sailboats. The trading post heritage lingers in the many B&B’s, art galleries, tourist shops and outdoor supply stores that cater to travelers heading north on the Gunflint Trail that heads into Waters Canoe Wilderness Area. On your way through town, be sure to stop at the famous 50 year old donut shop: World's Best Donuts.
✱ Read a series #8 OR read #8 from your TBR OR read a book with 8 in the total page count.

13. Drive 14 Miles from Grand Marais to Judge C. R. Magney State Park
Commercial Photography Named for the visionary Judge Magney, who helped establish 11 North Shore state parks, this park is home to one of Minnesota's mysterious natural wonders. The famous Devil's Kettle has been eluding experts for years wondering where the water goes once it plunges 70 feet into the gorge or “kettle” below. Take the 2.25 mile round trip and see if you can figure it out.
✱ Read a series #1 or #4 OR read #14 from your TBR OR read a book with 1 AND 4 in the total page count.

14. Drive 21 Miles from Judge C. R. Magney State Park to Grand Portage
Commercial Photography Our final destination has two impressive attractions. Take the short trail in Grand Portage State Park to see the spectacular 120 foot tall Pigeon Falls. Then head to the Grand Portage National Monument, where they have recreated a historic fur-trading headquarters. It offers a glimpse into the fur trade era and history of the native people. This brings us to the border of Minnesota and Ontario which is the end of the magnificent Highway 61.
✱ Read a series #2 or #1 OR read #21 from your TBR OR read a book with 2 AND 1 in the total page count.

✱ Read a series #1 or #11 OR read #11 from your TBR OR read a book with 1 in the total page count.

11. Drive 9 Miles from Lutsen to Cascade River State Park
The epic waterfalls at this park make it one of the most visited parks in the state!

Once a harbor teaming with French Canadian fur traders, Grand Marais is now alive with fishing charter boats and sailboats.

Named for the visionary Judge Magney, who helped establish 11 North Shore state parks, this park is home to one of Minnesota's mysterious natural wonders.

Our final destination has two impressive attractions.
✱ Read a series #2 or #1 OR read #21 from your TBR OR read a book with 2 AND 1 in the total page count.

of 14 Complete

Tasks MUST be completed IN ORDER. Task #1 needs to be completed before moving on to Task #2 and so on. It is a road trip and you can’t hop around.

✔ Highway 61 Starting Place: Duluth
We begin our trip in Duluth, an important port city on Lake Superior.
Read a series #6 or #1 OR read #61 from your TBR OR read a book with 6 AND 1 in the total page count.
Blind Descent - Nevada Barr - 7/4/18 - #6 Anna Pigeon

✔ 2. Drive 27 Miles from Duluth to Two Harbors
Head north to the quaint community of Two Harbors.
A Killing of Angels - Kate Rhodes - 7/10/18 - #2 Alice Quentin

✔ 3. Drive 13 Miles from Two Harbors to Gooseberry Falls State Park
Gooseberry Falls State Park is home to 18 miles of trails that thread through a green and silver tapestry of birch, aspen and spruce. It's also home to the state's most famous waterfall. Bring a camera for this Minnesota classic.
✱ Read a series #1 or #3 OR read #13 from your TBR OR read a book with 1 AND 3 in the total page count.
Yesterday's Echo - Matt Coyle - 7/18/18 - #1 Rick Cahill

✔ 4. Drive 2 Miles from Gooseberry Falls State Park to Iona's Beach
As you leave the park watch for mile marker 42 for one of the most unique beaches on the North Shore.
Bloody Mary - J.A. Konrath - 7/19/18 - #2 Jack Daniels

✔ 5. Drive 5 Miles from from Iona's Beach to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park
After six ships were wrecked in the area, a lighthouse was built atop this 100 foot cliff.
Fire and Fog - Dianne Day - 7/22/18 - 257 pages

✔ 6. Drive 10 Miles from Split Rock Lighthouse State Park to Black Beach
Next we check out secluded Black Beach in Silver Bay.
Irreparable Harm - Melissa F. Miller - 7/26/18 - #1 Sasha McCandless

✔ 7. Drive 2 Miles from Black Beach to Palisade Head
Palisade Head is a go to spot for artists, rock climbers and sight-seers.
Lightning - Dean Koontz - 7/29/18 - 372 pages

✔ 8. Drive 3 Miles from Palisade Head to Tettegouche State Park

Tettegouche Camp, on Mic Mac Lake, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features four hike-to cabins for a great “get away from it all” vacation.

The Temperance River is one of the most geologically interesting spots along the North Shore. The ancient waterway, shows the visible evidence of water shaping the rocks and gorge over millions of years. A short walk takes you to a footbridge that provides a beautiful view of the river.

Riding the Highways: MN Highway 61
To Completion
14/14

√1. Highway 61 Starting Place: Duluth
We begin our trip in Duluth, an important port city on Lake Superior.
√✱ Read a series #6 or #1 - Series #6 of the Miss Silver mysteries Miss Silver Intervenes by Patricia Wentworth 7.10.18

√2. Drive 27 Miles from Duluth to Two Harbors
Head north to the quaint community of Two Harbors. Plan on visiting the Two Harbors Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in the state. Then take a walk along the breakwater. It’s amazing to watch one of the big ships come in to the ore dock. On your way out of town stop by Betty's Pies for something sweet to eat.
✱ read a book with 2 AND 7 in the total page count. Kinsey and Me: Storiesby Sue Grafton 277 pages. 7.18.18

√✱ Read a series #1 or #3 OR read #13 from your TBR OR read a book with 1 AND 3 in the total page count. The Bus Driver Who Wanted to be God & Other Stories By Etgar Keret 7.28.18 130 pages

√4. Drive 2 Miles from Gooseberry Falls State Park to Iona's Beach
As you leave the park watch for mile marker 42 for one of the most unique beaches on the North Shore. Iona’s Beach has a distinctive pink hue of rhyolite and felsite bedrock stone which make a “tinkling” sound as the stones are moved by the waves. It's completely magical.
√✱ read a book with 2 in the total page count. The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny 372 pages 8.5.18

√5. Drive 5 Miles from from Iona's Beach to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park
After six ships were wrecked in the area, a lighthouse was built atop this 100 foot cliff.
√✱ read a book with 5 in the total page count. The Alice Network by Kate Quinn 8.12.18

√6. Drive 10 Miles from Split Rock Lighthouse State Park to Black Beach
Next we check out secluded Black Beach in Silver Bay. Over 25 years ago the taconite mining in the area dumped unusable taconite into the lake which colored the beach with the distinctive black color of the ore. Brilliant rust color cliffs line the landscape, and visitors can clip to the top of the cliffs for a view up and down the shore.
✱ Read a series #1Men at Arms by Evelyn Waugh series: Sword of Honour #1 8.15.18

√7. Drive 2 Miles from Black Beach to Palisade Head
Palisade Head is a go to spot for artists, rock climbers and sight-seers. Formed a billion years ago by lava flow that pushed the rock outward into the lake, the massive rock formation rises 932 feet above the shore. The view from the top is spectacular. And if you visit during the summer months you will find amazing fields of wild blueberries to pick for a great afternoon snack.
√✱ Read a series #2 OR read #2 from your TBR OR read a book with 2 in the total page count. Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert K. Massie 624 pages 8.19.18

√8. Drive 3 Miles from Palisade Head to Tettegouche State Park
Tettegouche State Park is often overlooked but its 9,000 acres encompass four lakes, undisturbed groves of northern hardwoods and the Baptism River whose 70 foot falls are among the highest in the state. Tettegouche Camp, on Mic Mac Lake, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features four hike-to cabins for a great “get away from it all” vacation.
√✱ Read a series #3 OR read #3 from your TBR OR read a book with 3 in the total page count. Berlin Red 384 pages by Sam Eastland 8.20.18

√9. Drive 20 Miles from Tettegouche State Park to Temperance River State Park
The 5,000+ acre state park is a little slice of heaven, featuring the only lakeside campsites in the area, spectacular waterfalls, and a forest filled with birch, pine and cedar. The Temperance River is one of the most geologically interesting spots along the North Shore. The ancient waterway, shows the visible evidence of water shaping the rocks and gorge over millions of years. A short walk takes you to a footbridge that provides a beautiful view of the river.
√✱ Read a series #2 or #20 OR read #20 from your TBR OR read a book with 2 AND 0 in the total page count. Who Watcheth 320 p. by Helene Tursten 8.23.18

Lutsen is home to the Midwest’s largest and tallest ski area that offers alpine skiers and snowboarders 92 sweeping runs over four mountains. Visiting off-season, you can hike, bike, and ride the 2-mile gondola Sky Ride which gives you views that stretch for hundreds of miles.
✱ read a book with 1 in the total page count. Original Zinn: Conversations on History and Politics by Howard Zinn 8.29.18 167 pages.

√11. Drive 9 Miles from Lutsen to Cascade River State Park
The epic waterfalls at this park make it one of the most visited parks in the state!
✱ Read #9 from your TBR Annie's Ghosts: A Journey Into a Family Secret 9.9.18

√12. Drive 8 Miles from Cascade River State Park to Grand Marais
Once a harbor teaming with French Canadian fur traders, Grand Marais is now alive with fishing charter boats and sailboats.
✱ Read a book with 8 in the total page count. On my Amazon Fire it says 288 pages, which does not agree with what it says the Kindle page # is but I'm sticking with my reader, so 288 pages. The Lost City of the Condor by Loretta Jackson 9.14.18

√13. Drive 14 Miles from Grand Marais to Judge C. R. Magney State Park
Named for the visionary Judge Magney, who helped establish 11 North Shore state parks, this park is home to one of Minnesota's mysterious natural wonders. The famous Devil's Kettle has been eluding experts for years wondering where the water goes once it plunges 70 feet into the gorge or “kettle” below. Take the 2.25 mile round trip and see if you can figure it out.
✱ Read a book with 1 AND 4 in the total page count. There Are Jews in My House by Lara Vapnyar 9.16.18

√14. Drive 21 Miles from Judge C. R. Magney State Park to Grand Portage
Our final destination has two impressive attractions.
✱ Read #21 from your TBR All Whom I Have Loved by Aharon Appelfeld 10.14.18

Duration: July 1 2019 - ???
Progress: 14/14

1. Highway 61 Starting Place: Duluth

We begin our trip in Duluth, an important port city on Lake Superior.
✱ Read a series #1
Sterling by Dannika Dark 7/3/18

✱ Read a series #7
A Ghostly Dare by Zoey Kane 7/10/18

✱ Read a series #1
Raintree: Inferno by Linda Howard 7/12/18

Undead and Unappreciated by MaryJanice Davidson 7/16/18

5. Drive 5 Miles from from Iona's Beach to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park
After six ships were wrecked in the area, a lighthouse was built atop this 100 foot cliff.

Archangel's Consort by Nalini Singh 7/26/18

✱ Read a series #1
Out of Time by Monique Martin 7/27/18

🚗1. Highway 61 Starting Place: Duluth
We begin our trip in Duluth, an important port city on Lake Superior.
