This is a tale of cruel, manipulative maiden, and disillusioned angry young man. Reminds me of a certain online subculture...

Pelleas’ concerns for marring his lady’s beauty, reminds me of Telemachus’ condescending-sounding remarks about Penelope’s tears and ruining her face. (Penelope also made remarks about her lost beauty to Odysseus as beggar.)

I’m coming around to see that this was maybe completely normal, expected social concerns, it is we the moderns that are strangely offended by that.
