Blazing Readers: Please post at least four comments related to the book here (spoiler tags preferred) to earn your bonus points.

Razo has no idea why he was chosen to be a soldier. He can barely swing a sword, and his brothers are forever wrestling him to the ground. Razo is sure it's out of pity that his captain asks him to join an elite mission--escorting the ambassador into Tira, Bayern's great enemy.

But when the Bayern arrive in the strange southern country, Razo discovers the first dead body. He befriends both the high and low born, people who can perhaps provide them with vital information. And Razo is the one who must embrace his own talents in order to get the Bayern soldiers home again, alive.

Newbery-Honor winner Shannon Hale returns the reader to the intrigue and magic of Bayern, first introduced in her critically acclaimed novel, The Goose Girl. Enter a world where even those with no special magical skills find in themselves something they never imagined.

Kay, I'll be done dogsitting tomorrow and I can swap out Enna Burning for River Secrets. So excited! We're going on another adventure! With Razo and his spiky hair, short stature, and permanent smile!

Ahh! That cover is the one I first read these books under! So cool that you used it!

I just used the first edition that popped up, which I think is the most popular edition, and that turned out to be it for this one. xD

I started yesterday and I'm 64% through. (SorryIreadsuperfastandyoucantotallyaskmetoslowdownanytime.) Anyway.

Ok, Finn and Enna are a great pair, but I have to say that Razo and Enna would also be super cute! Their teasing and pranks are adorable!

I dunno about Razo and Dasha. It just doesn't feel quite right to me. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Razo doesn't really have anything to his character that surprises me in this book yet. xD He's kind of an open book.

(A little more emailing went on, so I figured I'd post some pieces here.)

Me: Heyoo! I can't get on GR right now, so I thought I'd just email you. I finished RS last night. xD Are you ready to move on to Forest Born, or should I read a book in between? I'm good either way.

Coralie: Hey! Sorry. It's been mas chaos here. I'll read it today.

Me: It's okay! I'll just read something else that recently came out because I'm super excited. Let me know when you're ready to start Forest Born!

(And here's a discussion post she emailed me)

Man, the first chapter is promising! I think I've already noted that I didn't enjoy RS as much as the first two the first time I read it. But, I'm hoping I might like it more this time around.

I noticed the book isn't split into parts like the first two. I already kind of miss that. I know it's only formatting, but I felt it added to the story in its own way. I remember feeling like the time frame took me by surprise when I read these the first time. So much more time had passed between books than I expected, but this time around it feels more natural.

Razo cracks me up! Of course he climbed the tapestry. I love the way he sees Enna and described her to the reader. I also really like that the group maintained such close relationships after Isi rose to her proper place in the kingdom. She dotes on them and they group is so loyal and familial. I love the scenes where they show how casual they all are with each other. And I love the but about Conrad! I had totally forgotten that Geric's younger brother died between. GG and EB!!! My heart!

I feel kind of bad for Razo. He's so down on himself, but too much of a hambone to let anyone know. I loved the line about him not being the best at anything except maybe stuffing two cherries into one nostril! I forgot how funny he was. I think Talone picked him because he can be trusted, no matter what. That and Razo keeps everyone together. He keeps them grounded in his own lighthearted way.

(And I'll just go ahead and reply here)

Oh, wow, I hadn't even noticed that! I do like splits in books as a general rule because they can really pump up the drama.

Gosh, I completely forgot that Conrad was Isi's fellow goose keeper, and only just remembered. I had him in my mind as a random forest kid while reading the scenes with him. xD It's like I need to go reread every scene with him in it now.

Agreed!

Thanks for posting these! I was gonna go back and copy them over, but you beat me to it! 😁

I'm about halfway through. I totally don't trust Pela. It's been nearly a decade since I read these so I don't really remember what's going on with all the burning bodies and crates. I've pretty much forgotten everything about this book, like the Prince and Razo's fashion statement, and the sling shots! I totally forgot about the sling shot. Go Razo, Go!

Also (view spoiler)

Oh, and in response to Razo and Enna, I love their relationship. They goad each other and encourage one another in such a unique way. I guess I've never thought about them together as a couple. They've always felt like brother and sister to me, but maybe that's cause I adore Finn XD

Finished. Although I do still hold that the first two are better, I think I enjoyed this one more this go around.

I really like Razo's character. He keeps things lighthearted and had such a distinct voice.

What did you make of Radiance? Did your feelings ever change toward Dasha? I felt this plot held more mystery than the previous two. What did you think of that as a new plot elemental structure? What are your thoughts on Talone and M? And what did you think of Tira? Oh, and thoughts on (view spoiler)

Of course!

Oh yeah, Pela totally gave me creepy vibes. (view spoiler) And I loved the colorful clothing as a sign of what the two countries could become in relation to each other! Learning from each other and cultures adopting pieces of the other. Yes! The sling shots! (view spoiler)

Now I face the problem of stopping what I'm currently reading to go read Forest Born. xD Don't worry, I'll figure it out.

Hmm. The prince was a pretty good character. It was kind of exasperating how flippantly he dismissed not being in charge of his kingdom or his bride. I was like BE ASSERTIVE FOR ONCE IN YOUR &%#@ LIFE!

Eh. I still feel mistrustful of Dasha (view spoiler)

I enjoyed the mystery and the drama it incorporated. Secrets always make me devour books more eagerly. For example, I must warn you, Shannon Messenger (the author of Keeper) is horrible about cliffhangers and secrets. Like, there was a secret wondered about in book one that still hasn't been revealed in book six! She is really good at choosing the right moment for revelations, though.

Like I said, I ship everybody with everybody, so that was just like "aww yes more romance I ship it." xD

Learning more about the culture of another country was fun! And the whole (view spoiler) was exciting.

Right! I loved how he handled that!! And I did think the clothing was a great idea. It was a beautiful way to show growing trust and to humanize each enemy a little bit.

Yes! That's a great way to put it! He was so chill! I liked his lightheartedness and his amount of trust in his people kind of startled me, but I guess that's a cultural thing. And I totally wished he'd take more political interest too! But, his character felt very non-political. I guess, in a way, it works. He's the figurehead of the people. He's their image, but nothing more. (view spoiler)

Oh! I know you got the kindle edition; did it have the extra chapter from Dasha's pov?? Cause if not, I could totally post it here for you!! Yeah, I guess I can see how she's a little (view spoiler)

Yes, the mystery was a different tactic from the other two books, and it returns in Forest Born! You know, I'm kind of on the fence about it. Like, I love mystery, but I don't know. It was a bit of an unconventional mystery. Though, I did love the tension created between the two countries and the (view spoiler)

Agreed, and I had totally forgotten about her too.

Yeah, it did! It was cool! I dunno if it was perfection. I just know I don't trust her. xD (Broken clock? Do you mean broken record?)

I get what you mean. It was unusual.

Ha! I assumed that was the case, I was just wondering. You know, if you're pretty busy right now, we can totally postpone Forest Born a bit longer. I have a pretty hectic reading schedule right now, and that would work fine for me. I totally wouldn't mind, so don't worry about that. And the books aren't super popular at the library, so I'm sure I can check them out again easily.

It's totally up to you. I started Forest Born yesterday, but I haven't touched it all day today and I'm only 140 pages in. I've still got a non-fiction book I need to finish, though, if you want to squeeze something in between. Just let me know!

I was just in a rush earlier cause I walked Bell to the library to check on Keeper of the Lost Cities. Wasn't in yet, but they said to look back Monday. Plus, I've been all super scatterbrained today. Had my words all backwards and everything even with my family XD
