This thread is open to discuss Magic Gifts by Ilona Andrews.

Synopsis
Dinner date after a hard workday should be heavenly. Of course, dates between the Beast Lord and Kate Daniels don’t always go as planned. Undead run amok, heads are chopped off, lawyers are deployed with extreme prejudice, and drunk vikings call people out.

Novella is after Magic Slays, same time as Andrea in Gunmetal Magic, both intersect. Gunmetal Magic bonus.

      ~ Buddy Style Reads ~
Three Ways to Enjoy a Book!
At NRBC we use three styles of buddy reads. These will be indicated in the thread title as “Buddy Read”, “Relaxed Buddy Read” or “Informal Buddy Read”.
A “Buddy Read” has a discussion leader and a reading date is set to start the book. A reading schedule is posted prior to the start date and discussion questions are posted each day regarding that section of the book. More information about these types of reads is below. An example is here, showing a reading schedule here.

A “Relaxed Buddy Read” is similar to our usual “buddy reads” except there are less questions and break points. For example, a book may be split into three sections and those reading the book should pause at the end of the section to answer some discussion questions, make comments, or ask their own questions to other readers. An example is here.

An “Informal Buddy Read” doesn’t have a discussion leader and participants are asked to consider some generic questions when making comments about the book. An example is here.

A “Read and Watch Buddy Read” may be set up as any of the above, but we will also watch the movie or T.V. series - or even go to a play! - and make comparisons, discussing what has been left out or changed as well as the actors and actresses. There is a long debate of what one should do first: read the books or watch the movie? We usually read first, but it isn’t essential. Also, if you would like to join in, but don’t want to watch the movie, show, or play, but only read the books, that is fine, too. An example is here.

Take your time. I read fairly quickly but always stay several more days on the BR threads after finishing just to keep chatting.

I agree about Kate and Curran.

I'm curious about the necklace as well. Can't wait to get home and read this afternoon.

You found us! I overlooked the thread a couple of times myself yesterday. That BR thread has been super busy.

Victoria | 1132 comments I kept looking for it too! But glad I finally found it :)

I actually really like Ghastek for some strange reason.

I only managed to start a little while ago and just finished chapter 4. I have read this before, but I remember almost nothing. Everything so far just seems vaguely familiar, but I have no idea as to what is to happen - which is a good thing

And I really don't like the name Cutting Edge, whenever it's mentioned I think Kate is working at some cheap hair salon

LOL. I can just imagine some poor human woman turning up expecting to get a haircut and being greeted by Kate or Derek. The expression on her face would be priceless.

I agree on 'Cutting Edge'...I was expecting something really cool...you are right...it does sound like a haircut place! That might be why (view spoiler)

Victoria | 1132 comments haha I didn't even think of that, I really want a scene now where a woman comes in for a haircut

I just finished reading the bit where they visited the neo-Vikings and wish I had beer to drink while reading - it seemed fitting for that bit anyway :)

I think the scene with Andrea is just there as a tie in to Gunmetal Magic which follows Andrea and Raphael during the same time period. But I agree that it does feel a bit out of place

Kate and Curran (view spoiler)

message 23: by Victoria (last edited Jun 19, 2018 04:57PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Victoria | 1132 comments I finished!

I don't always enjoy series novellas, but I love the ones in this series! Although the Jim/Dali ones are admittedly not my favorite.

But this is a nice short, action-packed novella with some good Kate/Curran moments and I'm glad I re-read it since I had forgotten so much of it.

I'm looking forward now to re-read Gunmetal Magic since it's more of a full-length novel and dives into Andrea and Raphael's relationship. I was going to skip both these and dive straight into book 6, but I think Gunmetal in particular needs to be read first otherwise Andrea's story line in book 6 doesn't make much sense.

So when you're finished with this book join us to read Gunmetal Magic here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Tammie | 3018 comments I lost a bit of respect for Ghastek in that chapter honestly...I’m still holding out a bit of hope for him actually...

Tammie | 3018 comments I just finished as well...like the brief epilogue...kinda put a bow on the book/title.
I’ll give this 5 stars...for a Novella I thought it was very good...

Tammie | 3018 comments I just realized I skipped a book...whoops...will be going back to pick that one up before going ahead...I hate when I do that!

Victoria | 1132 comments Tammie wrote: "I lost a bit of respect for Ghastek in that chapter honestly...I’m still holding out a bit of hope for him actually..."

Ghastek is one of those characters for who for me can do just about any shitty thing and I'll still love him. Can't explain why, but he's one (of many) favorite characters :)

Victoria | 1132 comments Tammie wrote: "I just realized I skipped a book...whoops...will be going back to pick that one up before going ahead...I hate when I do that!"

Oh no! I've definitely done that before!

I would have to agree at least in regards to this novella. I have read all the main books but this was the first novella I have read and it does make guild story lines make a lot more sense. I am still deciding if I want to read gunmetal magic but I am quite excited for Hugh’s book Iron and Magic coming out next week :-)

Come read Gunmetal! It's a lot of fun!

And I'm also excited for Iron and Magic

Diane ~Firefly~ | 2243 comments So I forgot this was at the end of my PB copy of Gunmetal Magic, so I read it last night. What a great short story!

I love the Kate and Curran time together, they are adorable. And it was a compelling story - I was worried for the boy and hating his mother.

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 4947 comments Just started.

Love how she avoids Jim's call "I backed away from the phone like it was on fire."

Love how Curran ALWAYS shows up to help. ALWAYS.

Love their banter back and forth.

Love that so many of the books and novellas allow us to see them go on dates. :D

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 4947 comments I also love how much Kate cares. Voron trained her hard to break her of that, and she retained it anyways. (view spoiler)

LOL I had always thought it was a clever name, until I read this comment. Now I'll always think of them as a shapeshifter barber shop and beauty salon. LOL!!!!

Kate's snarky comments always make me laugh. It's one of the things I love about the character and the series.

She and Curran both have issues from their past, but they really are fantastic together.

Definitely a good one. The downside to going out to eat instead of staying in.

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 4947 comments Deanna wrote: "She and Curran both have issues from their past, but they really are fantastic together."

Makes me wonder if Kate and Curran's snarky but completely supportive relationship is based on Ilona and Gordon. If so, that's awesome :D

Their relationship is one thing that makes the series so great. None of the love triangle crap, just the right person coming along and them fighting to work together.

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 4947 comments bahaha visiting the Vikings. Curran shifts back into human (naked, obviously) and... (view spoiler) LOL

I kind of wondered if she deliberately refused to let him in just to see him and admire the view. ; )

I think Ghastek is okay but he proves again and again that he isn't very smart and only interested in his own little world.

Later book: (view spoiler)

I have to admit I also finish most of the longer book in one sitting. Even now with the re-reads I do it. My husband can forget all about talking to me while I'm reading this.
