Anya Leninjav (spacecadet1stclass) | 2 comments I read a lot of science fiction, but it's almost impossible to find any hard Marxist/socialist stuff. There is a lot of polymorphous pansexual Progressive-type stuff, and a lot of libertarian capitalist stuff, and a lot of conservative muhSpaceGuns stuff, but nothing in the vein of Soviet-style communism. Most of the 'leftist' stuff is so debased and mired in culture-war nonsense it's as bad as Baptists (which is how I feel about the American left in general).

As far as I can tell most science fiction writers are either conservatives or art fags.

John R Ursula Le Guin, Iain M Banks, China Mieville, Ken MacLeod. Neither conservatives nor art fags.....just great SF writers.

I like Ken MacLeod, but the Culture series is exactly the sort of 'pansexual Progressive' stuff I can't stand. I am very much the Old Left, where grifters get sent to the gulag...not into 'anarcho' socialism, especially when it's depicted as a universe where shiftless losers sit around watching robot porn until they kill themselves (summary of the Culture books in one line). Likewise of Le Guin. The 'libertarian left' is worse than actual libertarians as far as I am concerned.

Kaan | 1 comments We have our Bogdanov of course, though I don't think Red Planet is a good sci-fi. Average, I can say.

Mieville labels himself as a Marxist but I don't read Trotskiyst. Maybe he can write some good stuff, i dont know, not sure.

And some people praised Alexey Tolstoy's Aelita to me. You can give it a try.

Paul Majkut | 2 comments Anya makes sense to me, if I read her right. I am equally turned off by libertarians of all sorts, though I don't think of myself as either old or new left. In fact, I don't cut the pie of haves and have-nots by left and right but top and bottom. My own novel is a repudiation of libertarianism.

Charles Thorpe | 1 comments China Mieville is a Marxist and an incredible scifi writer. See also his October 1917 - a history of the Russian Revolution.

Aleister | 1 comments Soviet sci-fi authors almost all are socialists... Most prominent I think are: Arkady Strugatsky & Boris Strugatsky (early period), Ivan Efremov, Alexander Kazantsev, Alexander Belyaev (A. Tolstoy & A. Bogdanov were mentioned above). Also Soviet sci-fi for children and teenagers was writing in a socialist key, I recommend such authors as Vladislav Krapivin (sci-fi & realism), Kir Bulychev (also sci-fi not fot kids), Anatoly Moshkovsky.
