Ugh. I really hated this book. Yes, I know that many reviewers loved it. Yes, it found its way onto the 1001 Books to Read Before You Die list. Yes, that probably means I missed something -- or a whole lot of somethings. But, for me this was a waste of my reading time. I didn't like anything about it. I found it bizarre and clumsy.

Just. Plain. Awful.

Apparently a lot of people like it, though, since the rating isn't bad. I found it over-the-top vulgar, too experimental, and barely readable. Parts of it read like a play. Weird font size changes - some paragraphs are in caps. Parts of the book's text are in pictures. There are pornographic sketches throughout the book, too. I should have felt sympathy for the main character - an exploited adolescent girl, but the writing was so bad I was hard pressed to care.

Jamie Barringer (Ravenmount) (ravenmount) | 481 comments A girl whose father kept her as his girlfriend after her mother died moves to New York when her father finds a new girlfriend. She is understandably messed up, and since she had been brought up since the age of ten as a sexual partner for her dad, she has a lot of issues with her sexual identity and with trying to define her identity outside sex. The novel includes illustrations and sections of poetry and non-traditional or nonlinear storytelling, and reminds me a lot of some of my punk musician friends and their work.
Did I enjoy this book? No. But, folks who appreciate punk music or the punk aesthetic would probably appreciate this book, and women in the punk scene might find some of this novel particularly relatable.
I gave this book 3 stars on Goodreads.
