The dog's owner is a lady who owns a book store. She gets sick and a man comes and looks after the dog and maybe the store? Spoiler - the man and lady end up getting married. This was my daughters favourite book around 2008.

The Bookshop Dog by Cynthia Rylant. There's a read aloud on Youtube so I'm pretty sure it's the one you're talking about. Originally published in 1996.
