A large number of the books on the list were also made into Films. Which would make the best Book/Movie combos?

You can Copy/paste the whole list to minimize typing.
Please mark Y or Yes if you think the book was made into a film or TV show. Use stars (***) or words to indicate that the movie is worth seeing. Or erase the books if you just don't know.

Paula To my knowledge, these are books which have been made into movies or television programs (single episode or series.) What a testament to the quality of the novel to also be created as television or film offering.
I'm a member of the Book/Movie group and we'd love to hear comments on any of them. I have no comments on whether it's worth watching. We each have different tastes in books; likewise with the visual media.

1984-George Orwell several times
A Confederacy of Dunces-John Kennedy Toole movie in development

Beloved-Toni Morrison
Bless Me, Ultima-Rudolfo Anaya

The Clan of the Cave Bear-Jean M. Auel

What are the BEST book/movie combos? For books with several movies, which are the best?

Not on this list, but I just saw that they're making a film based on The Art of Racing in the Rain. That's a favorite book in my household.

message 11: by Linda (new)

Linda | 915 comments Hmmm.....depends, I guess.........some people might determine that the best movie/book combos are the ones where the film is faithful to the book. Others might think the total opposite.
Actual fact, my reaction to some books on this list was, "Oh, they just made the film last year/two years ago, so people must be voting on the films they saw".

I saw the BBC mini-series made in 2015. I don't know if that was the same one. It had Aidan Turner. It was really good.

This book was a City-wide read a several years ago and the author came to town to talk and ask questions. It's a fantastic story and I remember thinking what a great film it would make. I was in a second-hand store today browsing books with a lady and when I found this title, I handed it to her, described the basic elements of the story (Enzo narrates!) and she grabbed it right up. I'm happy to hear it will be a film. Definitely hope they do it justice.

I think that's probably true for many people who responded to the surveys. It doesn't mean they didn't read the book or love the book, but it's just easier to remember the book if you also saw the movie. The movie gives your brain more data to link to the title - visuals, music, action, voices, etc. along with your emotional reactions to all those things, and everything else that's linked to the memory. So it's just more available in your memory if you're asked to recall books you loved.

There are still several books on the list that I cannot honestly remember if I read them or not. I know I saw the movie because I remember character's faces or scenes. But I have to keep searching my memory for clues (past conversations, related memories, book clubs, where I lived, etc.) to "know" I read the book. I can remember a few books because I link them to a hammock in a wonderful porch in my first apartment. But I'm talking about 40 year old memories here, so what can you do?

Omg, a porch with a reading hammock! Would have been hard to get me to move away!

Julie Lewis (riobrewster) | 22 comments I'm with you Nancy. Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights I *think* I've read. There are a few others like that too.

"Atlas Shrugged-Ayn Rand unfortunately, they made a movie"

LOL - It was 3 movies right? Horrible acting. Cate Blanchett would've made a fantastic Dagny Taggart.

Oops. Dream casting for your favorite book anyone?

Same. I was 40 pages into the Martian before I realized I had read it already.

message 19: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Game of Thrones - TV series is very close to book #1, but I've heard it strays a bit from the later books.

And Then There Were None - there have been some good ones of this.

The Chronicles of Narnia - there was a great PBS series I think in the 90s.

Don Quixote - The Man of La Mancha

Dune - the movie with Kyle MacLachlan and Francesca Annis is good, but long.

Flowers in the Attic - There was a movie, I think in the 90s.

Frankenstein - the movie done by Kenneth Branagh is the closest to the books

The Godfather - not sure how close the movies came to the book

Gone With The Wind - not sure how close they are but the movie is not to be missed!!

Grapes of Wrath - Henry Fonda at his best

Great Expectations - I hear Gillian Anderson did a great Miss Haversham

Handmaid's Tale - the series is incredible.

Harry Potter - I haven't seen all the films, but the ones I have are very well done

Heart of Darkness - Apocalypse Now is a retelling

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - there was a great series in th 80s or 90s.

The Hunger Games - love the films

The Hunt for Red October - except for a Russian with a thick Scottish accent, the movie is incredible

Jane Eyre - the BBC version with Toby Stephens is wonderful

Jurassic Park - I have only seen the first film and will only see the first one.

The Lord of the Rings - the Peter Jackson films are wonderful.

The Martian - the film didn't try to kill Mark Watney nearly as many times as the book did

Moby Dick - I watched an excellent opera based on it - it may still be out on the PBS Video app.

Pride and Prejudice - Colin Firth! End of story!!

To Kill A Mockingbird - excellent film. Fairly close to the book.

Twilight - only seen film #1, but liked it.

Where the Red Fern Grows - get the Kleenex out!!
