If you have a suggestion for a future book for this club to read/discuss, please submit it here. Once we have several book suggestions, I will create a poll (in the middle of July, towards the end of our first 'meeting') with the top choices. The winner of the poll will be our next book for discussion!

Please post your book suggestion as a reply below with the following:
1- Name and Author
2- Goodreads link (search for it and post)
3- Why it relates to this group (briefly)

If your suggestion is chosen you'll get a shout-out and I'll make you a temporary moderator so you can lead the discussion! :)

Suzy This isn't a book suggestion per se... or rather not just one book I'm suggesting. This is a list of non fiction memoirs that might be of interest to pull reading material from at some point if others are interested.

Small. Offbeat Religion Memoirs
This list is for non-fiction memoirs of people who grew up or spent a large period of time in a religious community considered strange, cults, or just non-mainstream by the rest of society.
These are only a few examples from the list... there are many more covering polygamy, Scientology, other more extreme cults...

Why I Left the Amish
by Saloma Miller Furlong

Banished: Surviving My Years in the Westboro Baptist Church
by Lauren Drain

Stolen Innocence: My Story of Growing Up in a Polygamous Sect, Becoming a Teenage Bride, and Breaking Free of Warren Jeffs
by Elissa Wall ...

Elizabeth Stolar | 3 comments Also, I'd recommend a book called I Fired God. Someone had suggested it on the Pickles main page a year or so ago and I read it. I've thought of it often during discussions in the Pickles group.

This book is The Witness Wore Red. it is about the life of one of Warren Jeff's wives and how she escaped. She eventually testified against him. The book relates in that this is an oppressive religious cult.

This book is about a young girl called Rachel Walker who desperately wants to escape her fundamental Christian family... who sound a lot like the Duggars and their ilk!

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

Non-fiction, memoir of a woman who grew up in a religious survivalist family in Idaho who shunned modern medicine, feared governmental authorities & institutions, and home-schooled their 7 kids only marginally, who ended up leaving to achieve a PhD at Ivy League institutions of higher education.

I've read that one! It's good.

Audrey | 2 comments Girl at the End of the World by Elizabeth Esther.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

It's a memoir of someone who grew up in a fundamentalist cult. She is currently open about her struggles with mental health, and I believe her sister has given a TedX talk about the same subject matter.

Weve got a lot of great suggestions! I'm going to close them off for the second round on July 1st, so if you have a suggestion, be sure to let me know before then. I will make a poll and members will vote throughout the first 2 weeks of July for our next book!

message 12: by JB (new)

JB | 3 comments My vote is for "Educated" as one poster already suggested.

This extraordinary work of investigative journalism takes readers inside America’s isolated Mormon Fundamentalist communities, where some 40,000 people still practice polygamy.
