Debbie | 14 comments I read this long ago about a boy who moves next door to a girl who lives behind a walled garden. There is something mysterious about her. Written in about the 50s, I think, it is very reticent in revealing the problem. The author was a woman who had other historical children's books out, well known in her time. I wish I could remember her.

SBC (essbeecee) | 989 comments Thinking of some authors who wrote historical fiction for children in the 1950s, could it be something by Philippa Pearce, L.M. Boston, Jill Paton Walsh, Elinor Lyon, or Patricia Lynch?

Tom's Midnight Garden comes to mind.

Rainbowheart | 21140 comments Did you read it in the '50s?

It seems like an unusual topic for a kids' book from that time frame.

Rainbowheart | 21140 comments I don't think it could be either of those. They definitely don't address the topic of illegitimate children.
