Kate S | 6391 comments The movie Grease was released on June 16, 1978, and one of the songs is "Summer Nights" when Greaser Danny and Australian "nice girl" Sandy each sing to separate groups at school about their summer love. Read a book about forbidden love set or published in the 1970s.

Please post questions or suggestions about task 20.8 in this thread.

Sam (theliteraryhooker) | 1008 comments Does anyone have any recommendations for this one?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 13123 comments Here is the listopia of Best Books of the 1970s.

https://www.goodreads.com/list/best_o...

On the first page, I see two that might qualify for this task, though admittedly I have read neither.

Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast

The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum

There may be others that didn't catch my eye.

It's worth looking at some other links, especially those at the top of that list, but also the Popular (which is a list of 200 most shelved by year)

https://www.goodreads.com/book/popula...

You get to this by clicking on Browse > Explore > Most Popular this month - then click on the year tab right hand side and open the year menu.

message 4: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 4717 comments I researched a bit on that list and some others and depending on how broad the definition of forbidden love is, I came up with these books published in the 1970s:

The Cement Garden incest
Maurice same sex
Summer of My German Soldier YA 800 Lexile Jewish/Nazi
Heat and Dust Race
In a Free State Same Sex?
What Dreams May Come Separated by Death?

message 5: by Anika (new)

Anika | 2141 comments I started listening to The Beast's Garden by Kate Forsyth yesterday and think it'll fit here...it seems like it's going to be another Beauty and the Beast retelling (my second in a row--didn't realize that either of them were heading that way as I picked up both on two different people's recommendations!)...it's set in Nazi Germany and tells the story of a girl (who is sympathetic to the Jewish people who are being persecuted) who must marry a Nazi officer to save her father. Think it'd be a good one for this task.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 13123 comments Anika wrote: "I started listening to The Beast's Garden by Kate Forsyth yesterday and think it'll fit here...it seems like it's going to be another Beauty and the Beast retelling (..."

I think it does not fit the task as it isn't set or published in the 1970s.

message 7: by Rosemary (new)

Rosemary | 3223 comments I wondered about A Question of Power (1974) by Bessie Head. There's the mother's forbidden interracial love which was illegal in South Africa at the time, and it also says "she establishes an entirely abnormal relationship with two men." Do you think it would work? Anyway it sounds interesting and fits several other tasks.

Another one I found was Group Portrait with Lady (1971) by Heinrich Böll. This one definitely seems to fit, as the description says "At the center of his tale is Leni Pfeiffer, a German woman whose secret romance with a Soviet prisoner of war both sustains & threatens her life."

message 8: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) | 1008 comments Thanks for the links!

Would Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter work here? From the description the main character starts a relationship with his aunt.

It doesn't say in the book description that it is set in the 1970s, so no as it was published in 1995.

Yes,

The one I'm planning to read is The Far Pavillions from 1978. The story centres on a white man raised Hindu who loves an Indian princess who must choose between the heritage of her people and the man she loves. You might not see it nearly as often now over here, or eve as often in Indian cities, but even when I was in university arranged marriages were the norm in India. I had a classmate who was allowed one year of university and then she either had to marry the man of her parents' choice or be disowned by her family (her parents had immigrated from India but she was raised in Canada).

Yes, those both sound like what I was thinking.

It is fairly broad, and not about what the law says. It can be culture, religion, social status, gangs (eg West Side Story), but definitely a no-no for some reason, and not because a character has decided not to get involved, etc.

I don't know about the one separated by death as I'm not sure how that is forbidden and I haven't read it, but it doesn't sound forbidden per se.

I feel like such a dummy! I completely misread the task--I saw "about forbidden love OR published in the 1970s" missed the whole "set or written in" aspect of the task. :-D

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 13123 comments Anika wrote: "I saw "about forbidden love OR published in the 1970s" missed the whole "set or written in" aspect of the task. ."

Not to worry - you can't know what I haven't seen reading lately. ;-)

I have done this sort of thing many times! You should have seen the crazy mess I made just trying to describe it--I couldn't get my brain into short and simple mode yesterday. It took the brains of the moderators to make 3 possibilities to see what I was thinking. This was the closest one to what I was thinking. I had more words for the forbidden love part, but I think it, plus some other things, made it too confusing.

Tien (tiensblurb) | 2729 comments A few tasks & other challenges have been pointing me towards this book which I've been avoiding but now it seems UNavoidable as it seems to fit here & I can't think of anything else on my tbr... The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough. Do you think this fits? Pub in 1977 & about a woman & a priest...

It's been shelved as 'forbidden-love' by 27 users (https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/users...)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 2729 comments by the way, here's the link to the shelf, if you'd like to browse:

forbidden love

edited: sorry, not a helpful link at all, I only found The Thorn Birds and these other 2 being published in 70s

Flowers in the Attic (Dollanganger #1)
Forbidden Fire

Oh, this definitely fits (but I'm not an "official" approver). I am still considering re-reading it!

Sorry, I missed this earlier - but a priest sworn to celibacy having a love affair definitely seems to fit the category of forbidden love. It has been too many years since I've read this to remember anything about it, though.

I read Beauty earlier this year - it's a straight up retelling of Beauty and the Beast so I think it would work. :)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 2729 comments My subconscious is very determined to Not read The Thorn Birds so I've been looking for an alternative all day lol

I think this one should work: Green Darkness:

*published 1972
*wikipedia summarises something about love between the MC & a chaplain...; I still can't seem to avoid priests but at least I actually own this book & have planned to read it this month regardless so it'd be great if it's approved ;)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 13123 comments Tien wrote: "My subconscious is very determined to Not read The Thorn Birds so I've been looking for an alternative all day lol"

I was thinking about this book again, and have realized that what I remember about it is living on a Station. I don't remember when I read this, but it must have been when it was newly released.

message 25: by Megan (new)

Megan (gentlyread) | 358 comments I'm going through my TBR now looking for possibilities. Does My Lord Murderer (published in 1978) qualify as forbidden? A widow and the killer of her late husband fall in love.

message 26: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) | 4643 comments I read it too when it came out. I was a teen and was shocked by the priest - parishioner - church love triangle. I believe she even got pregnant and had a daughter. One odd thing I always remembered was the main character loved this color called “Ashes of Roses” and how a dress of that color looked so good on her. Ever since then I’ve always tried to figure out what that color is, grey-pink? Pink gray? Faded pink? Isn’t it odd the little trivial detail from a book that would stick with you?

Yes, published in 1977, so it does work.

Is it the term, Station, that got you? What would be the equivalent term for you, Ranch?

I thought I was the last Australian left who hasn't read The Thorn Birds.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 13123 comments Tien wrote: "Is it the term, Station, that got you? What would be the equivalent term for you, Ranch?"

Yes, we'd probably call it a ranch, but I'm pretty sure I understood they were the same thing. I think it might have been the sheep, but mostly the sheer size of the place.

Tien (tiensblurb) | 2729 comments Coralie wrote: "I thought I was the last Australian left who hasn't read The Thorn Birds.

Ha ha ha, I knew there was a reason why we're friends lol

On a serious note though, I think I only added it on my TBR because it was on this list of Aussie books I picked up from the library back in 2010... About 100 books added on 27 & 28 Oct 2010 :O

I'm working through them now... I'm still avoiding this one though & a Bryce Courtenay one (I already read 1 of his and am reading another now so that's enough of him this year!)

message 37: by Megan (new)

Megan (gentlyread) | 358 comments Can I get a judgment on whether the book I asked about in message #25 qualifies as forbidden love? If not, I might need to borrow The Thorn Birds from the library, too. :)

Bea | 1787 comments OK...I finally got it. My planned book was published in the 70s but did not contain a forbidden love that I could tell...The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. So...it was back to the drawing board.

Would Looking for Mr. Goodbar work for the forbidden love part or does that relationship have to be a more permanent one than frequent one night stands (see description)?

I don't think so, because it's more that she can't find love so goes for one night stands, however that same author does have one I think would fit, Attachments
