I can see why this book is beloved, especially by the LGBTQIA community. I believe that Edmund White broke through some concrete walls with this story. Unfortunately it made me very uncomfortable -- not because it was LGBTQIA, but because it was a bit too explicit for me. I don't really enjoy sex scenes that are so vividly described -- straight or gay.

This is the second book I have read by this author. I actually read the sequel to this book, The Beautiful Room Is Empty, previously. I do like White's writing style for the most part, but as Kelly mentioned, I have difficultly with sexually explicit content. His descriptions of sex acts were too graphic for my taste and made me uncomfortable. Without those parts it would have been a pleasant and enjoyable book. I would like to read his travel book, The Flaneur: A Stroll through the Paradoxes of Paris.

Glad I am not alone -- made me feel like an old prude. LOL

Pip | 1559 comments I bought Flaneur as a present for my daughter! I must borrow it cos I live his writing.

Gail (gailifer) | 1617 comments I am going to give it 4 stars. I really appreciated his writing style and how he built up the main character, moving back and forth through his growing up so you come to know him by layers. The sexual descriptions were treated honestly and that allowed me to move through the graphic nature of the sexual encounters without too much discomfort. Although I have to say that his follow up books don't call out to me because of that discomfort. Maybe as Diane says his travel book would be good.
