A stronger book than the first in this series, but the abundance of rape and sadistic cruelty continue to be bothersome to me. There is an interesting story buried under the dreck.

I was disappointed that we didn't learn more about the actual Stone of Tears...

I agree that this was stronger than the first maybe because at this point we know the characters in depth. Yes the cruelty is bothersome and how often it is either mentioned or detailed is bothersome. I understand where it could lead to the character development or even illustrate the "evil" and sometimes even makes sense in the world build but it does get a bit much.
