I really enjoyed this story. I don't read a lot of vampire books; I often find them a bit repetitive. But Sunshine was unusual and interesting, and I liked her relationship with the vampire here. She wasn't a vampire groupie, didn't go seeking a thrill, but when adventure found her she found the reserves in herself to overcome her situation and (pardon me) come out shining. The tone of the book seemed just right, and I loved that her real passion was baking. Her description of cinnamon rolls left me hungry!

I thought the world building was interesting, too; at first I assumed it was a "normal" world, but quickly learned about the past magical wars and the minor magical abilities that manifested among Sunshine's acquaintances. I wish that my superpower was always being able to pour hot coffee....

Silvana (silvaubrey) I will always recommend this book to those who want to read vampire stuff. This and Fevre Dream by GRRM. Scary vampires, not the sparkly or overly gorgeous ones.

Mary Catelli | 516 comments It's an interesting sort of alternate history where the history is so backstage as to make it not certain.

Nick (doily) | 975 comments I have just asked those of you who have read this book to comment on it to those who have not in the "Roll Call -- No Spoiolers" thread. Is this a book which non-vampire readers can enjoy?

Renee (elenarenee) | 82 comments I did like this book. I a so tired of all vampire books reading like a young adult romance or like soft porn.

This read like an adult relationship with adult problems,
