I neither like or hate Evelyn for me she is just human, she makes mistakes but also go for everything because she wants. I didn't expect Monique's father was Harry's lover but it was like coming clean when that moment happened.

I'm so glad Celia and Evelyn ended up together even when they lost so many time, Harry's dead was so painful and Connor's too. This book leaves me speechless but is also kinda addictive. Can't wait to read more of this author. (hide spoiler)]

I never thought to make the connection between the man Harry killed and Monique. I liked that the book she decides to write ends up having the same name as the book. Evelyn is such a complex character and very interesting.

Oh sorry about that. I was using the audiobook edition and it didn't say the chapters but they were on the sides so I went by that. I guess I should have realized that meant that the books didn't include the chapters.

As Monique says, she wasn't good nor bad, she was just a person who did what she thought was best to achieve her goals (and there are people who do much worse thing than she did, because most of her actions affected primarily herself). First quarter - (view spoiler)[I'm already as enamoured with Eleanor as Monique is! She is so self-assured and graceful and I really like how she conducts herself. She is also such an enigma and I can't imagine being anything but a clumsy fool around her! She has such an interesting history and I'm eager to learn more about them. She has so far proved herself to care little for the men she uses to gain her place in Hollywood's history and yet, somehow, I don't dislike her for this? (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[I expected this to be an interesting read but was not ready for how emotional it was!! Evelyn's first marriage was one of convenience, as have all the rest, but there has been much more heart involved in them too. Her love for Don was real and could have lasted a lifetime if he didn't turn out to be an abusive asshole! I was so glad to see her freed from her ties to him, even if it meant a few years of a decline in her fame.

Celia and Evelyn's relationship warmed my heart and it helped me to better understand the reason for her quickie marriage in Vegas. She did it to protect them both from public hatred. Obviously homophobia still exists but it is heartbreaking to read of how condemned LGBT+ individuals were in our very recent history.

I also really appreciate the conversation about definitions and how this excludes people exist outside of one carefully designed box. Monique is biracial and Evelyn is bisexual and close-minded society struggles to find a place for them because of it. (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[It might not be conventional, but I wish this little family of five could have continued to exist forever, although with more truth involved. There was so much genuine love and friendship there and Connor would have grown up surrounded by such love and acceptance. Evelyn might have felt like she ruined it with her sex scene with Don, but I struggle to see that. It was society who ruined it by not allowing them all to be true to themselves without fearing their condemnation. (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[SOBBING! This book captivated me throughout and I was so eager to see exactly how Monique fit into Evelyn's life. I had an inkling her father was the link between the two women but in no way could understand why.

Max proved to be just another despicable man. He loved the idea of Evelyn Hugo the movie star rather than who Evelyn really was, on a daily basis. It proved to be a lonely life being her, even when looking in she seemed to have everything anyone could desire. (hide spoiler)]

I'm so fascinated with the characters. They were not completely black and white but they fell perfectly in the grey area. That's the thing I love about Evelyn.

She used Ernie as a stepping stones for her career but I couldn't hate or judge her for that. Under any circumstances, people will always do what best for them. What do you think about this?
