It was 1953 in Hong Kong. A group of English were at a party waiting to hear the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on the wireless. There Joy was a bit tipsy and needed air. She said it out loud and an officer escorted her outside where she proceeded to get sick. He wanted to stay with her to get her home but she was embarrassed and just wanted him to leave. As she was leaving Stella came out in a huff. The wireless broke down and they would miss the beginning of the coronation. Joy told her she wasn’t feeling good and was going home.

When Joy woke the next morning, everyone was still passed out and drunk or hung over. She felt fine. She wanted to go out horse back riding but had no one to go with. Bin-Lin, the house girl, said there was a man at the door for her. It was Edward Ballantyne, the man who helped from the night before. Joy was embarrassed and just wanted him to go away. She mentioned that she was going out and he asked if he could join her. She was going horse back riding. She was quiet in the car and was happy to find out that he really could ride. She enjoyed listening to him talk and she kept sneaking glimpses at him. One the way home, he talked more and then there was quiet. He announced that he was shipping out in 2 days and Joy lost it. She told him that she loved being with him and agreed with everything he said and that he couldn’t leave her. He thought a minute and said that he needed to speak to her dad. He was going to ask for her hand in marriage. Joy’s parents were not happy to say the least. Her mother, condescending as ever, didn’t like the idea of Joy being happy, she was jealous. Finally, her father gave them the blessing to get engaged and they could get married at his next port, which would be in New York in 9 months. Not was she wanted but she asked Edward to please write.

It is 1995, Sabine lives with her mother, Kate in London and she is being sent to her grandma’s in Ireland. She barely knows her grandma as her mother is estranged from her. Kate is giving her partner Geoff the boot to welcome in a new guy to the house. This has happened before when Sabine lost her previous father figure. Sabine’s grandma was supposed to meet her at the fairy but she wasn’t there, there was a man, Thom holding a sign with Sabine printed on it. He told her that her grandma stayed back because the vet was with her horse. Sabine felt that was how she ranked, below a horse.

Sabine got to the house, it was more rundown than she remembered it. She hadn’t been there since she was 6, 10 years ago. Her grandmother was not very welcoming, and she showed her to a room upstairs, with the bathroom downstairs as her grandfather was in the best guest room. Her grandma took her out to see the horses and was horrified that she didn’t ride. She went back to her room and cried. There was no computer, no phone, no television, no one younger than her mom. She was to be at dinner at 8 and when she arrived 7 minutes late, that was the first thing her grandfather said to her. He couldn’t hear and kept yelling at her to speak up and it was rude to take so low. He asked her if she hunted and was horrified when she said no. She said she liked the vegetable soup but when they brought out beef, she announced that she was vegetarian.

Sabine was having a terrible time. They all wanted her to ride and she didn’t want to. There was nothing to keep her in touch with the outside world, no internet, no computer, no phone and no TV. She spent time with Thom. Thom encouraged her to ride, told her things would be better if she did, she didn’t want to. One day her grandmother left for the days and asked her to look after her grandfather.
He was asleep. She went exploring and found an office with some old picture and got lost looking at them. It was past time to wake her grandfather for lunch so we went to do it and found that he was gone. In a panic, she went to Mrs. H. He must have gone on a walk with the dog, they had to go look for him. She went to get Thom’s help and they went out. She was gone for 45 minutes and was drenched and panics when she got back. She was yelled at by her grandfather for have his lunch late. Thom said he got back 5 minutes earlier. Her grandfather asked Mrs. H to bring his lunch, his granddaughter would rather eat in the corridor.

That night she was not in the mood to hang with her grandparent and Mrs. H invited her over visit with her daughter Annie. Annie ran a B&B (not successfully) and her husband Patrick was a writer. When Mrs. H asked about dinner, Annie had forgotten and Mrs. H cooked. Sabine told Annie all her woes staying with her grandparents. She asked about her mom, and Sabine said they weren’t really close. At dinner Patrick came down and thing seemed OK but then Mrs. H said something Alice gave her the evil eye and didn’t talk anymore. After dinner Patrick took her out as Mrs. H cleaned up. Thom showed up and she got his dinner. They went to watch TV after dinner and Alice fell asleep.

Back in London, Kate is wondering about her life. She is not dealing well with the silence of being alone. She had always had someone around. Sabine was always there and then she had Jim followed by Geoff. Now there was Justin but he traveled a lot and wasn’t going to move in. She was trying to write her column but nothing was coming to her. She wasn’t feeling up to being outgoing but had to go to a social gathering for her friend Maggie. Maggie had been married for some years to a man no one thought would be a match. She said it’s is always great but he is a good man and he is good to her and the kids. Maggie suggested that maybe Kate hadn’t found the right man.

When Kate got home, she was preparing for Geoff to come and pick up his stuff. Justin had called and said he would be home in a couple of days. She asked if he wanted her to meet him at the airport and he said that he would go home and sleep for 12 hours and see her the following day. She was upset he didn’t want to see her right away. Geoff showed up late, which he never did. She had dressed down for him as she didn’t want him to try and get her back. He seemed in good spirits with new shoes. He asked her how she was doing (she was going to ask him that). She said she was good and so was Justin. He finally told her that he was seeing someone, Sayonra from work. They had her over for dinner a few times. Geoff was happy and that didn’t make Kate too happy. She thought how she looked and thought to seduce him (and wipe that smile off his face). She finally got his stuff and he left.

Thom finally got Sabine on a horse and it wasn’t as bad as she thought it would be. Sabine had heard noises and found her grandmother outside trying to coax her grandfather in the house. There was an awful noise from some dogs. She wanted to go see the hounds but Thom wouldn’t take her. Her grandmother was going over to see the hounds and decided to take her. That was a mistake. The hounds were not treated the same as the house dogs. One was injured due to a horse trampling it. The guest as the hotel in town have no regards to the animals they ride and how to care for them. The injured dog would survive. The grandmother was trying to get Sabine away from there when one of the hands showed up with a truck with “feed” for the hounds. A dead horse. Sabine was horrified. She ran back to the house and cried. Joy was at a loss with what to do. She was so looking forward to the visit from her granddaughter but she really had no idea what to do with her. She was too citified. She spent time picking out a gelding for her. The only time she was happy was when she was at Annie’s. She went to the blue room and heard crying and chickened out and went to see Edward. Later she went back and knocked, no answer. She was walking away and saw the door to the library opened and saw the pictures strewn around. She felt like her privacy had been invaded and put all the pictures back in the box and slammed the lid on it.

Sabine was over at Annie’s watching TV and visiting (observing) Annie. She was complaining about her grandparents and Annie was telling her to give them a chance. There was a knock on the door, Mrs. H & Thom always just walk in. It was Mrs. Ballantyne asking for Sabine. She wanted Sabine to come home and Sabine said she would be there later. Joy lost her cool and started yelling at her for going through her personal things (photos). Sabine said she didn’t think she would care and she just wanted to see picture of her mom when she was her age. Sabine burst into tears say she couldn’t do anything at the house. By that time, Patrick was in the room also. Joy realized what happened and apologized to Patrick and Annie and left. Annie told her Sabine would be home later. When she got home, Joy went to Edward’s room and cried about messing things up with Sabine. All he said, is there sausage for dinner. Sabine timed her return when her grandmother would be eating dinner and her grandfather in his room. She bypassed seeing either of them and went up to her room to pack. She was going to wait for her grandmother to go to bed and call her mother and let her know she was coming home. She would deal with Justine. There was a knock on her bedroom door, Joy came in with a tray of tomato soup and bread, she noticed the ½ packed suitcase but didn’t say anything. She said she needed to clean out the study and would Sabine want to help her.

Joy had been married 5 months earlier on a 48 hour leave of Edwards. She is looking forward to being with him again and had been re-reading his letters over and over until they had started to fall apart. Stella had been away from her husband for 3 months but is finding distractions on the ship in the crew. Georgina has her kids to keep her busy.

There was going to be a costume ball on the ship. Stella has a couple different costumes she wanted to wear. She was spending a lot of time with Pieter and Joy kept trying to reminder her of her husband, Dick. The party was in full swing, Pieter had black shoe polish and was a Egyptian trader, Georgiana was a first officer all in white dress uniform, Stella was Rita Haywood, in the dance of the 7 veils and Joy went as the Queen. Everyone had drank a bit more than normal as they shop was swaying. The Captain announced that Pieter was the winner of the costume party but he was nowhere to be found. Them Georgiana walked him, with black shoe polish smudging her dress whites. This set off Stella and she start yelling at Georgiana and then she ran off. Pieter came in with white spots on his chest where is shoe polish has been wiped away. Peiter didn’t feel the tension at the table until the captain came over and presented him his bottle of champagne and told him he should touch up is costume paint. Joy went to comfort Stella. Stella was worried that she married the wrong person and asked Joy how she knew Edward was the write person. She describe all that she loved about being with Edward and Stella just told her she has it easy, no one ever wanted to be with her.

Sabine was enjoying her time with Joy going through all the photos in the study. She felt her grandparents were living a great love story. She was told how Stella stayed with Dick for a short time and then went from man to man. Her last husband died when she was 62 and then she was alone and a bit sad until she died a couple of years before. Sabine thought about her mother going from man to man and didn’t want to be that way, she wanted what her grandparents had. Mrs. H. was celebrating her 32nd Anniversary and Sabine was invited to the party. She only knew Thom and Annie & Patrick. She had ridden by Annie & Patrick’s one day and Patrick had his head in his hands and Annie was staring off to space. She had waited a while but neither of them moved. She noticed they were distant at the party. Patrick looked a little unkempt which wasn’t normal for him. He has bags under his eyes and Annie looked sad and as animated as an ornament.

Sabine felt her monthly curse come on unexpectedly and she was unprepared. She asked Mrs. H. where the bathroom was and looked for a tampon or something. She found nothing. She thought of Annie. When Mrs. H. came around to see if Sabine was alright, Sabine asked for Annie and then Mrs. H. said that wouldn’t be a good idea. Mrs. H. got something for Sabine. When Sabine got out, the dinner was winding down, they men were heading to the pub, they tried to get Annie to go but she said no and took off for home. Sabine asked Mrs. H. if Annie was an alcoholic and she explained that Annie & Patrick had lost their little girl a couple of years before and they haven’t been the same since. They have been tried to have another baby but have had no success. Sabine went home and didn’t know what she would say to Annie so stayed away for a while. Her grandmother asked her to watch her grandfather and she said OK although she didn’t want to. Her grandfather acknowledged that he didn’t do much anymore and she felt better.

It was the day of the hunt. Every one was excited, including the horses. Sabine was worries, she didn’t want to see any foxes get killed. Joy looked her over before they headed out and Thom kept close to her during the ride. At one point she realized she had not seen a fox and was no where near the hounds. Thom has stopped to help a horse that got caught in barbed wire and told her to go ahead, he would catch up. She did so and befriended a boy called Bobby McAndrew who wanted to ask her out. He talked her over a really big jump. He complimented her (even though she had her eyes closed) and she told him that she “Didn’t even take the gate.”

When the ride was over, Sabine had to take care of her horse before she could take care of herself. She was freezing and hungry. Joy came in to tell her there was no more hot water at the house. Sabine was heartbroken and then Joy said she has talked to Annie and she could take a bath there. She went to Annie’s and could feel the tension between Annie & Patrick. Patrick sent her upstairs to the bathroom and told her to take as long as she wanted. She could hear the argument although it was one sided on Patrick’s side. She felt that she should take Annie’s side but knew that Patrick loved her. As the water was cold and she was waterlogged, she decided to leave. She left when they weren’t in the room and looked back and saw Annie holding her stomach. Mrs. H. had made Sabine a vegetable casserole and Joy was going to join her. They were just getting ready to eat when Edward showed up (dressed oddly). He was asking questions about the hunt. Then his face fell into the casserole. Joy told Sabine to call the doctor.
Meanwhile, in London, Kate was trying to figure out how to get Justin interested in her instead of the TV. It seems the romance has already gone out of their relationship but she doesn’t want to admit it. Her friend Maggie thinks Justin has it made, Kate cooks all his meals, cleans up after him and he doesn’t have any bills to pay. Kate was not happy to hear that. They are sitting on the couch and she it trying to seduce him when the phone rings and it was Joy telling Kate her father is not doing well and is in the hospital. Justin asked if he should call the airlines to get her a flight. She realized he didn’t offer to go with her.

Christopher, Kate’s brother, and his wife Julia showed up at the house and pretty much took over. Sabine was not a big fan. They took over the chores and rearranged things in the house seemed to want to leave Edward’s care to Joy. Sabine helped with Edward, reading and spending time with him. There were stickers on things all over the house for who would get what when the parents died.
Kate ended up kicking Justin to the curb before she left for Ireland. She was hope to be greeted by Sabine but Julia greeted her instead. Julia is not her favorite person. When Kate first saw Sabine, she was excited but Sabine was hesitant and not sure how she felt. She knew her mother wanted something from her but not sure what.

Joy remembered returning to Hong Kong 6 years after she and Edward were married. Her father had died in that time and they were visiting her mother. Her mother was happy only when something in Joy’s life wasn’t perfect. They had waited to have kids until they were more settled. Joy’s mother wanted to get her help around the house but Edward said she didn’t need any except Laundry as they didn’t have kids or anything. Then he asked her why she wasn’t drinking.
Back in Ireland, Kate was jealous that everyone was getting along fine with out her. She volunteered to read for her father but Sabine said she had him covered. She went to Sabine room to tell her about Justin but Sabine wasn’t surprised, she didn’t expect him to stick around for long. This hurt her mother. Kate then saw Sabine and Joy in the study going through pictures. She felt left out.

Thom told his story of going to England. His mother was convinced he was following Kate so she didn’t like Kate. He easily got a job and did a great job. When he lost his arm, the lady he worked for told him he had a job for life but when he started drinking and crashed her car, she kicked him to the curb. He found other jobs but lost them. He got involved with some seedy people and then left. That was his story. Kate found herself tongue ties around Thom and didn’t remember him being so good looking. She started avoiding him. When he called her out on avoiding him, he asked her to dinner.
There were two dates Saturday night. Sabine went out his Bobby. They went to the movies and then for pizza and had a good time.

Joy was in with the vet and Duke, her aging horse. The horse is not doing well and the pain medication is giving him ulcers. She knew it was time to let him go yet she begged the vet for one more day, to give him something for the pain for one more day. Kate had been avoiding Thom since their date. One day the opportunity to go into town with him arose and she took it. They were to the shore talking. She asked him why he didn’t ask her questions about her life and relationships. He told her he learned to not get wound up about things he can not change. He told her there were a couple of girls he like since her but not enough. He had one question for her. Why did she pick the painter to give herself to, why not him? She said that if it was him, it would have meant something, he would have made her stay.

Sabine was told by her grandfather’s nurse to get out for a little bit. She went to the study and re-read Geoff’s letter telling her that he was getting married. Her mother didn’t seem to care at all. Kate came in the study to ask if Kate wanted some lunch, she was ambivalent. They got into an argument and Sabine told her mother that she didn’t care about anyone except herself, she didn’t even care that Geoff was getting married. Sabine realized then, that Kate didn’t know. She apologized and Kate went to make lunch. She the met Thom at the summerhouse. She told him it was over between them and she was going back to London. He blew a gasket, he told her that she was not always right and this time she was definitely wrong. He was going to leave to take care of the horses and she said she would join them. Thom asked about the horses and in Sabine was back. She was but there was a horse and a rider in the yard, it was Joy on Duke. Liam was going to go after them but Thom told him to leave them and they all walked away as Joy and Duke walked into the woods.
